2014 Cowan Cellars Fiano, USA, California, Sonoma, Wine Review

"Florida" Jim Cowan is doing some really interesting things with Italian (and other) varietals and at fair prices.  This is one of his more straightforward white wines.  Made from the Fiano grape more typically found in Campagna, Italy.  Light green gold in color.  The nose is nice with almonds and a nice salinity to it.  On the palate, this is medium bodied but a rounder fuller texture.  Not quite the acidity of the Italian versions, but still enough to work with food.  It has a quality that is almost like a non-oxidized sherry in a good way.  Easy drinking but still with some depth.  Nice

One of my favorite vineyards from one of my favorite wineries.  Purple in color.  The nose has black cherries, black raspberries, some bramble and a bit pf pepper.  Wonderful texture.  Lush but with great energy.  Deep but unwinds in the glass.  Juicy deliciousness.  Black raspberry and black cherry fruit.  Slight tannins.  This will last another decade, but why?  It is so unique and great now.

2014 Sandlands Carignane, USA, California, Contra Costa County, Wine Review

If you don't know Sandlands, this is a winery you should check into.  The wines are made using grape varietals that are not the usual for California.  Tegan and Olivia Passalacqua are making wines that are a bit lower in alcohol from not the usual locations.  Their pricing is reasonable as well.  This one is around $30.  Ruby in color.  The nose has cherries, slight rhubarb, a hint of barnyard and a bit of bitters.  On the palate, this is medium bodied.  Nice cherry fruit with some black raspberries.  The bitters quality is also there which is kind of interesting.  Works well with food.  Ni

This is a wine produced by the now defunct Crushpad from their purchased grapes.  Purple in color.  The nose has cassis, dark cherries with a fair amount of oak.  On the palate, this has firm tannins.  There is cassis fruit but also a lot of oak.  I wonder if there is enough fruit to outlast the oak.  I am not sure and would not take a chance.  drink this sooner than later.

Warning, this is a biased wine review.  This is our own label.  So why post a note?  Because people often ask me how the wines are drinking and what are my thoughts.  I try to be honest and forthright but at the very least, I make the wine I want to drink, so hopefully, it is a wine that I like.  YMMV.  2010 is a vintage that has taken a while to come around but it seems to have gotten some traction and is getting there.  This bottle was opened and allowed to breathe for 8 hours prior to serving.  Purple in color.  The nose has black raspberries, roasted meat, white pepper and slight floral

2001 Ortman Family Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon, USA, California, Napa Valley, Wine Review

Purple in color.  The nose is very nice with cassis, cedar, slight leather and graphite.  On the palate, this is fruit with some depth.  Slight tannins.  Some complexity.  Nice cassis fruit on the palate.  Overall, this is very good and approaching maturity.  Probably won't get better but no hurry either.  Worked well with food.

This is still young but drinking quite well now.  Purple in color.  The nose has dark cherries, black raspberries, leather, bramble and spice.  On the palate, this is juicy with lots of fruit.  Black cherries mostly.  Some leathery tannins.  Depth.  Delicious.  Drank over a couple days, it was better on day 2.  Nice finish.  Food friendly or on its own.

Made by Thomas Rivers Brown at his eponymous winery.  This is the basic Napa bottling and not the single vineyard wines.  It is still a great Napa Cabernet.  Purple in color.  The nose has cassis, cedar and spice.  On the palate, this has a lovely texture.  Cassis fruit with some spice.  Firm tannins.  This will continue to improve for a decade but is delicious now with a long decant.  There is some oak but it works deftly with the fruit.  Deep.  Great finish.  At $6, it is well priced for a higher quality Napa Cab.

2014 Jonata Winery Todos, USA, California, Ballard Canyon, Wine Review

7% Syrah, 28% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, 5% Cabernet Franc, 5% Merlot, 3% Sangiovese and 2% Viognier.  Purple in color.  The nose is nice with black raspberries, some black pepper, spice and slight floral notes.  On the palate, this has some depth with a nice varietal complexity.  Good mouth feel.  Works well with or without food.  I don't know if this improves but should last a decade or so.  It is basically, the "leftovers" for the Jonata single varietal wines.  That doesn't mean it is not excellent in its own right.  A nice alternative to their expensive bottlings.
