1992 Ravenswood Pickberry, USA, California, Sonoma, Wine Review

This is a "Right Bank" styled wine. There were some concerns over opening at age 26. The cork looked in great shape. The wine was decanted for sediment. There was a lot on the side of the bottle and in the wine. Ruby in color. The nose is older but nice. Cigar box, cherries, dried cherries, slight old leather and slight black cherries. On the palate, this took a bit to open up and then it drank beautifully. Complex and layered. Cherries, dried tobacco, dry earth. No tannins. Good and in balance acidity. Nice finish. Not an OMG wine, but a very good wine that would compare favorably with most 1992 Bordeaux (and even many from 1990). Worked well with medium bodied food.

Pop and pour. Purple with ruby swirls, still looking bright. The nose is nice. Cassis, dried currents, tobacco and dust. On the palate, this took some time to open and then was singing. At peak or perhaps just a bit past, this won't last as long as the 01 or the 94, but it has plenty of great drinking left. Layers of cassis, dried fruits and dry earth. Good balance. Very food friendly. A lot in common with and older Bordeaux but still has some energy and sunshine screaming California.

Ho fortunate to be able to taste this wine again. This was opened at a friend's birthday party and as you might expect, it went quickly. Luckily for me, they made sure I got a glass! The 92 is often overlooked between the 91 and 94 (and even the 93), but 1992 was a very good year too. The 92 is drinking quite well right now if starting to show a bit of age. Garnet in color, ruby at the rim. The nose takes one to Bordeaux. Gorgeous combination of cassis, tobacco, slight dust and slight leather with just a hint of dried fruits. This is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cab Franc. Just a gorgeous wine that while still youthful, is showing some maturity. We drank this pop and pour but I would recommend a lot more air or decant. Purple in color. The nose is great with cassis, black cherries, tobacco, slight leather, and spice. Wonderful rich texture. Great balance. Medium tannins. Plenty of fruit; cassis and black cherries layered with earth and tobacco. Long finish. This wine has a nice complexity that shows itself as it unwinds in the glass. This is a Bordeaux blend with 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 23% Cabernet Franc. It is a bit more understated than the Cabernet from the True Vineyard. Drinking well now, this improved with a bit of air and really needs a few more years in the cellar. But it is fantastic right now. People who prefer Bordeaux will probably prefer this to the Cab and visa-versa. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. Dominus is one of the greats. The same owners as Petrus in Bordeaux, they make what is generally believed to be the most Bordeaux styled wine in Napa. But it is also something of California with sunshine and ripeness. This bottle had been decanted for a couple of hours. Deep purple in color. The nose has cassis, black cherries, cigar box and slight earthiness. On the palate, this has light tannins. Cassis is prominent with underlying earthiness. Tight layers that unwind in the glass.
