Purple in color with ruby swirls. The nose has cherry candy, some char and spice. On the palate, this has a nice texture. The cherry candy fruit carries thru. Not a lot of acidity but some. Needs some bigger food to work with. This is a Zinfandel blend that retails for around $30. Drink up in the next couple of years as this probably won't make old bones.
This is a Zinfandel blend. It seems to be a bit past prime at this point but still hanging in there. Not as energetic as it was a few years prior. No sin in that for this wine, it just means to drink the newer vintages in the first five years or so. Purple in color. The nose has cherries, black cherries, some spice and a bit of alcohol. On the palate, mostly red fruits; cherries and raspberries. Not deep but tasty. There is some heat on it, more warming than hot.
Ulises Valvez was one of the great American success stories in the wine world. An immigrant to this country, he built his vineyard and winery into a top notch winery. Sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago at far too young of an age. His winery carries on. This is a Zinfandel blend that also has 17% Peite Sirah and 5% Grenache. The vineyard was originally planted in 1888 and hand farmed by Ulises Valdez since 1988. There are some very old vines. Purple in color. Sometimes its good to have an inexpensive red wine on hand. This is ok. Certainly not for everyone though. It is a blend of Zinfandel and Petite Sirah. Purple in color. The nose is nice. A bit meaty with black raspberries and some baking spices. On the palate, this is slightly sweet. Made for immediate drinking. Black raspberry fruit. Probably better on its own than with food. For $15, it is fine.
This is the second release of the Orin Swift project now that Dave Phinney's non-compete with Prisoner Wine Company is over. It was nice to get a chance to try this. This is a very solid wine. Purple in color.
This remains my favorite Carlisle Zinfandel year in and year out. There are lots of reasons, but chief among them is the texture. So rich and lush yet the wine has so much balance and energy. A blend of 96% Zinfandel and 4% Carignan. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with raspberries, black raspberries, slight blueberries, smoke and slight bramble. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, black raspberries, raspberries and slight black cherries with smoke and some dry earthiness. Great acidity. Long finish. Delicious.
