Purple in color. The nose has cassis, cherries and spice. On the palate, this is simple and one dimensional but pleasurable. Drinking well now. Tannins all resolved. More cherry fruit than cassis on the palate. This is easy drinking and will work ok on its own or with a wide variety of foods. Drink up in the next few years.
It's always fun to try older Bordeaux's. This one still had something to offer if a bit past its prime. Ruby in color, with slight browning at the rim. The nose offered cherries, dried cherries, slight stewed fruits and a nice tobacco funk. On the palate, this has a nice complexity with cherry fruit over forest floor. Good acidity. If you own any, drink up soon. It went well with all kinds of food.
I seem to have had a lot of bottle variation with this one. Or, given that this is usually the last bottle of the night, maybe it is palate variation. In any event, this wine is always good to great and this bottle was in the middle. Deep golden/orange in color. The nose has honey and apricots. On the palate, this is sweet but nowhere near cloying. Enough acidity. The honey notes come thru and pick up peaches. Nice finish to the wine and to the evening!
Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is dusty with some black cherries and cigar box. On the palate, there is some black cherry fruit. No tannins to speak of. Not much depth but some complexity. Good acidity. Classic aged Bordeaux although given the pedigree, more was expected. Still, a fine wine to serve with dinner. It is probably past prime and these should be drunk up.
Yquem might be the single greatest wine in the world. Yes, those are bold words, but it is arguably true. This bottle was wonderful indeed. Paired with Mango roses in a Rose water and honey sauce, it was sublime. Light golden in color, this wine is still quite young. The nose is amazing with slight apricot, lots of honey and orange peel. This bottle was bought on release back when it was affordable. My last bottle, and it was served at dinner with friends along with an eggplant and tomato soup. A very good pairing. The wine itself is very interesting. Plenty of depth and complexity but showing quite youthfully. Medium golden in color. Part of a 40th Birthday party celebration. I am not sure if this was a great example of this wine, but the wine was sound if old and still with plenty of life left. Pop and decant for sediment, it took about 30 minutes to blow off the bottle stink. Purple in color, ruby/brown at the rim. The nose has leather, some funk, cherries and dried cherries and dust. On the palate, there is still some cherry fruit left. Also some underlying earthiness. A nice bit of acidity is keeping it lively without being over the top. Fades at the finish. Tasted from a 375ml bottle. Light golden in color. The nose is nice with pineapples, honey and bit of peach. Also some vanilla. On the palate, this is viscous and rich. Not cloying but a little goes a long way. Good acidity that cuts through the sweetness. The pineapple carries thru. Nice finish. Probably best on its own or with some cheeses at the end of a meal. This should last for a couple of decades.
Cos d'Estournel is one of the great wines of Bordeaux and so, one of the great wines of the world. 2008 is a vintage that doesn't always get the respect that it deserve coming right before the pair of great vintages 2009 and 2010. The nose has plums along with some dusty tobacco. Also a very interesting saline feature. On the palate, this is very tannic. Black cherry fruit with a bit of earthiness. Good balance. Nice finish. Everything you could want in a value Bordeaux.
