This wine appeared on the market in large quantities a few years back. This may have had something to do with the sale of the estate in 2014 from the Lurton family to Dennis Debourdieu.
What a privilege to taste a wine that is 68 years from vintage and is not only alive, but really firing on all cylinders.
Not a whole lot more to say about Yquem that hasn't been said, but it is arguably the greatest winery on the planet. The 2013 is a very good if not top vintage, but still a thrill to drink. Golden in color, light with just a tinge of orange. The nose is great with apricots, slight honey and slight tangerines. Viscous. Full bodied. Great balance. On the palate, this is delicious. Always a pleasure to drink Rieussec. It is one of the great wines from Sauternes. This year it also comes in a spiffy new bottles that is very different. A blend of 89% Sémillon, 9% Sauvignon Blanc, 2% Muscadelle according to the winemaker's notes. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with apricot, orange zest, slight honey and a bit of lemon. Full bodied. Viscous. Sweet, not cloying. Good acidity. On the palate, this is delicious. Orange zest, lemon and honey. One of the better values in Sauternes. Light golden in color. The nose has with pineapples, honey and some of peach. On the palate, this is viscous and rich. Sweet but not cloying. Good acidity that cuts through the sweetness. Honey and Pineapple. Nice finish. This is great on its own and will work with a not too sweet dessert. Drink over the next fifteen to twenty years.
Always a pleasure to drink what is arguably the greatest wine in the world. Not the best and not the worst vintage. At age 27, this is mature but with decades left. Red/orange in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with apricots, peach, honey and marzipan. Slightly viscous. Complex on the palate. Moderate acidity. On the palate, honey, Crème brûlée with just a bit of underlying char. A finish that goes on forever. Delicious. This drinks great on its own and will work with a more savory dessert, but that is not necessary.
From a 375 ml. Golden in color with slight orange hues, clear and bright. The nose is nice with honey, peaches and a slight dried orange rind note. Viscous. Sweet, not cloying. Enough acidity to match the sweetness. On the palate, honey, apricots and slight peach. Clean. Long finish. Very tasty. This probably has twenty years left. A nice match with a not too sweet cake.
Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with honey, apricots and simple syrup. Medium bodied. On the palate, oranges and slight alcohol note. Good acidity. Still showing very fresh but mature, too. This is at peak or maybe slightly past but should drink well for another decade. Great on its own, this will work with a savory dessert such as a polenta cake.
What a treat to taste this wine that was opened by a friend for his 60th birthday. While perhaps not the best vintage for sauternes (great red vintages seldom are), this was still outstanding. The color of iced tea (sort of red/brown/orange) clear and bright. The nose is nice with apricots, honey and cashews. Viscous. Very slightly sweet. Medium bodied. Moderate acidity. On the palate, orange peel with some honey. Long finish. This should continue to drink well for the next fifteen to twenty years. It probably deserves to be consumed on its own or better yet, with birthday cake
From a 375ml bottle. Amber/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is great. Pineapples, honey and an herbal note. Slightly sweet (but less than expected). Good acidity. Viscous. On the palate, oranges and honey. Long finish. Very tasty. This went well at the end of the evening all on its own but will work well with citrus or less sweet baked desserts. Drinking great now, this will drink well over the next twenty years.
