2014 Fontodi Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review
Arguably, as good as Chianti gets, the Vigna del Sorbo is classified as a Gran Selezione. At age 11, this is still quite young and needs a bit of air. Deep purple in color, ruby at the rim, opaque and bright. The nose has cherries, black cherries, tea leaves, sandalwood and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. Great acidity. On the palate, this is tight but delicious. It takes a few hours to open and then drinks quite well. It is great on its own but even better with some food. It would be great with a big plate of Spaghetti and Meatballs. Drink over the next twenty years.
2023 La Spinetta (Rivetti) Il Rosé di Casanova Toscana IGT, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review
This is a delightful Rose that is also a great value. It is a 50/50 blend of Sangiovese and Prugnolo Gentile. Light orange/pink in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice cherries, slight blood orange, a hint of salinity and peach. Light to medium bodied. Creamy texture. Nice acidity. On the palate, this drinks easy. Flavors of cherries, orange and slight peach. Long finish. This is nice on its own and will work with many foods. It would be a nice choice for Pasta Prima Vera.
2001 Caparsa Vin Santo del Chianti Classico, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review
Friends stayed at this vino tourismo in Tuscany and shared this bottle bought on site. It is a blend of 47% Malvasia Bianca, 47% Trebbiano, and 6% Malvasia Nera. Light brown in color, bright and mostly opaque. The nose is excellent with figs, some apricot and slight orange peel. Viscous texture. Good acidity. On the palate, this is sweet, not cloying. Flavors of figs, slight honey, and a bit of apricot. Good finish. This is nice on its own, but may have been better with a biscotti. Still vibrant if showing some age. It could probably go another decade, maybe two.
1996 Antinori Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Tenute Marchese, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review
Deep golden/orange in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with caramel, apricots and slight honey. Full bodied. Viscous. Great acidity. On the palate, this is sweet, not cloying. Plenty of depth and complexity. Long finish. This is drinking well and in a very good place. It should have another decade or more left. Very nice on its own but would also work with some Biscotti or a not too sweet cookie.
2020 San Felice Chianti Classico, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review
This winery makes a variety of Chianti Classico wines with this being the basic offering. That said, it is consistently an excellent wine and a great value. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, cranberries, nutmeg, slight dried leaves and char. Medium bodied. Strong acidity. Medium tannins. On the palate, this has cherry flavors with some spice and forest floor. Good finish. This would be better with food. A nice wine for pizza night or a plate of pasta. Drink over the next five to eight years.
2017 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review
Made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso grapes in Tuscany. Deep ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has cherries, sandalwood, slight black cherries, spice and roasted herbs. Clean. Medium bodied. Medium tannins. Great acidity. On the palate, this is drinking well. Some depth and complexity. Flavors of cherries, slight black cherries with underlying forest floor notes. Long finish. This begs for food and would be great with your favorite pasta. Drink over the next eight to fifteen years.
2019 Supremus Toscana IGT, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review
2016 Tenuta di Ceppaiano Keith Haring Toscana IGT
This is a Super Tuscan blend of 60% Sangiovese, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Merlot from Tuscany. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries, cassis, slight vanilla, spice and slight mint. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Great acidity. On the palate, this seems mature but just coming into its own. Flavors of cherries, cassis, black cherries with a touch of spice and a bit of mint. Long finish. This is nice on its own but better with food. A nice choice for pizza night to be sure. Drink over the next five to eight years.
