2003 wasa a very hot summer in Europe and many wines reflected that heat.  At age 16, this wine is ripe and sweet but does not seem to be hurt by the heat.  In fact, it was delicious and has matured beautifully.  Still has years to go.  Light golden in color.  The nose has minerals, slight peach, slight simple syrup and is very clean (no petrol).  On the palate, this is viscous and slightly sweet.  Nice peach and minerals notes.  Decent not great acidity.  It was paried with a roasted beet salad with deep fried goat cheese croutons and that was an excellent match.

This is their basic Riesling.  It retails for around $20 and is a great value especially in great vintages like 2016.  This is sweet.  Light golden in color.  The nose has minerals, some pear and a slight honey note.  On the palate, the pear carries through.  Sweet but not over the top.  On the finish, it turns drier.  Nice minerality.  Would work great with salads or Thai/spicy foods.  This should last for a decade if well stored.

Green gold in color.  The nose is already showing some petrol which is a bit concerning for a 2015.  Also some slight grapefruit and bit of wet rocks.  On the palate, this is slightly tart.  Labeled as Trocken, it is mostly dry.  Some minerals.  A bit of lemon fruit.  Not sure where this goes from here.  It retails for around $20.

This is the basic Riesling from one of the top producers of Riesling in the Nahe and in Germany.  Drinking quite well today.  Screw capped.  Light golden in color.  The nose has nice minerality and a bit of pineapple.  On the palate, this is slightly sweet.  Good acidity and balance.  Slight pineapple and peach with underlying minerality.  Good finish.  This will work great with spicy foods or lighter foods.  Great value for $20.  It should last for another 7 to 10 years but if you can't find this vintage, its good in just about every vintage.

Screw Capped.  Light golden in color.  Upon opening there are a slight amount of fine bubbles.  It appears to be trapped CO2 which blows of quickly.  No harm, no foul.  The nose is great with green apples, slight wet rocks, slight lemon and simple syrup.  On the palate, this has a fair amount of sweetness.  Ripe fruit; citrus and peach.  Good balance though.  Drinks easy with some depth.  Young now and very fresh and vibrant.  It will develop over time.  Delicious.  9.5% Alc.  This will go with a wide variety of foods.  Considering the screw cap and the sugar and acid levels, this should ha

The 2015 is awesome but it is shutting down as I write this in 2018.  Time to let even the basic wines sleep or give them some air.  This is light golden in color.  The nose has wet rocks and a slight pineapple note.  It gives the perception that it will be sweet but it is dry.  Great minerality.  Long finish.  This is under $20 and a great value.  Screw capped as well.

Great showing for this wine.  Everyone was blown away with this.  It has really come into its own.  Light golden in color.  The nose is very clean with slight pineapple, lots of minerals and hints of honey.  On the palate, this is sweet but not overtly.  Great acidity.  complex and deep with minerals, tropical fruit and pineapple.  Clean no petrol.  Long finish.  Great with food.  Stunning.

Germany’s Nahe Region: Wine Innovation and Tradition

The Nahe region is one of Germany’s smallest winegrowing regions comprising just under 11,000 acres of plantings. Fully 75 percent of the vines planted are to white varietals specifically Riesling and Muller-Thurgau. The remaining 25 percent of vines are dominated by the red blending grape, dornfelder. The area is home to many steep vineyard sites and the Nahe River languidly strolls by, bending just before the minuscule village of Oberhausen.

Nahe: Germany’s Wine Gem

Last fall, I discovered the Nahe wine region for myself. It’s easy to overlook the Nahe when the wine regions along the Rhine are so close by, but I highly recommend this beautiful part of Germany. I’m already planning my next trip to the area.
