This is a new winery for me. At age 52, it still has some life left although I am sure past prime. It is the color of iced tea. The nose has some oranges and slight honey. Medium bodied. Some sweetness although most has faded. The palate has some apricot and honey. Enough acidity to carry some food. Drink up. It will work nicely with a plain sponge cake.
For 35 years Soliloquy has been the flagship white wine from Flora Springs in Napa. The wine bursts with grapefruit, lemon, lime kefir, lychee, and back notes of resin, white peach, Asian pear and mango. The acidity holds the wine and fruit in check while allowing it to be a companion with a diversity of food. It’s comprised of 73% Sauvignon Blanc, 12% Chardonnay and 15% Malvasia and a brief seven months of aging in French oak rounds it out. This is 100% Sauvignon Blanc from the Loire Valley in France. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has minerality, salinity and slight cat pee notes. Light bodied. On the palate, lemon/lime notes. Good acidity. Some depth. This works better with a bit of food. A roasted beet & goat cheese salad would be nice. Drink over the next couple years.
Green/gold in color. The nose has some tropical fruits along with some minerality. Good acidity. On the palate, this is dry. Tart Mango fruit with some minerality. Good finish. This is easy drinking on its own and will work with lighter foods. Chicken salad would be a nice choice. Drink over the next five years.
This is a very interesting Sauvignon Blanc that worked well with lunch sitting outside on a hot afternoon. Ordered off the menu at Go! Wein in Vienna, Austria. Silvery/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is more new world than old. A bit grassy, a bit sugary with a chervil note. Medium bodied. Dry on the palate. Notes of lemon and lime. Moderate acidity with no bite. Good finish. It went well with a mushroom in dough dish and also spaetzle and cheese. Drink over the next couple of years.
This is a blend of 73% Sauvignon Blanc, 15% Malvasia and 12% Chardonnay from Napa. Having tasted the last few vintages, this just keeps getting better and better. One of my favorite white wines from Napa. Green/silvery/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with tropical fruits, slight grassy note, and a bit of spice. Medium bodied. On the palate, peach guava, with slight chalk. Good balance. Long finish. Drink over the next five to seven years. This great on its own and would work well with trout or tuna off the grill.
Silvery in color with some very pale gold. Very tight at the beginning, it slowly opened after a few hours. Minerals and saline, and eventually some grapefruits. Medium to full bodied. Very interesting on the palate. Tight at first, slowly it shows some minerality and eventually some grapefruits and finally a bit of lime. Also a hint of maybe chalk. Very refreshing. This drinks great with or without food. It really would work well with oysters. Drink over the next five years.
2020 Viña Morandé Gran Reserva Sauvignon Blanc Single Vineyard, Chile, D.O. Casablanca Valley, Wine Review
This is a more "serious" take on Sauvignon Blanc which can sometimes be too much, but it works here. Yellow gold in color, slightly cloudy. On the nose there is some grapefruit, spice/oak, and a bit of honey. Medium to full bodied. Good acidity but still round at the edges. On the palate, grapefruit, peach, ginger and spice. A bit of lemons on the finish. This drinks well on its own but can hold up to quite a bit of foods. Grilled trout would be a nice match.
What a fantastic value in Sauvignon Blanc. Made from grapes grown 15km from the Pacific. Silvery/green/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose has peaches, grapefruits and salinity. Medium bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, grapefruits with underlying minerality. Peaches come out on the mid-palate. A hint of menthol on the long finish. Light tannins. This is nice on its own but will work well with food too. Shrimp off the grill would be great. Screwcapped.
This is made utilizing organic grapes. At 12.5%abv, it is clean and lean. Yellow gold in color, clear and bright. The nose has a nice combination of peach and ginger. Light to medium bodied with a slight viscosity. The overall effect is a nice mouthfeel. On the palate, grapefruit and lemons. Good acidity. Long finish with grapefruits. This drinks well on its own and should be very food friendly with lighter foods. A nice pick for sushi. Drink over the next two to four years.
