Silvery green in color. The nose has a mineral nose with some green apples. On the palate, this has some tannins which is interesting. The green apples carry thru as well some citrus on the palate. Dry (6 grams per liter). Good finish. This seems very tight right now and could probably use some air. Seems like it should improve for a couple of years and be good for a decade. Very food friendly.
2001 Château de Schengen Riesling Vendange Tardive, Luxembourg, Moselle Luxembourgeoise, Wine Review
Easily the best Luxemourgish dessert wine with age on it ever tasted! Ok, this is not very common. It was purchased on a visit to the winery. From a 375ml. Light golden color with a bit of green. The nose is nice with wet rocks, slight grapefruit and a bit of honey. On the palate, this has some acidity bit not a lot. Good depth and complexity. Viscous texture. Worked well with an assortment of cheeses. A fun experience as well. Less acidity than its German counterparts and more minerality than its Alsatian neighbors. Very nice.
This is the basic Riesling from one of the top producers of Riesling in the Nahe and in Germany. Drinking quite well today. Screw capped. Light golden in color. The nose has nice minerality and a bit of pineapple. On the palate, this is slightly sweet. Good acidity and balance. Slight pineapple and peach with underlying minerality. Good finish. This will work great with spicy foods or lighter foods. Great value for $20. It should last for another 7 to 10 years but if you can't find this vintage, its good in just about every vintage.
Pale silvery/gold in color. The nose has slight, slight, petrol and along with slight pineapple and with air, minerals. On the palate, it seems more about grapefruit with an underlying minerality. This is mostly dry but there is some sweetness especially on the finish. Long finish. This would be great with food. Another superb value from this winery at $13. A reasonably unique expression of Riesling but close in style to the Finger Lakes. It will be interesting to see how well this ages.
Yellow/green in color. The nose has wet stones/minerals. Also some peach qualities. Really explodes from the glass. On the palate, this is slightly sweet. Lots of depth. Nice minerality. A lot of 2015's have shut down but this one was open for business about 20 minutes after popping the cork. Would work well with lighter foods or also spicy foods. Still young (of course), this wine probably has two decades left. At under $20, this is a screaming good deal.
An Internet wine friend passed away this week. Although I never met him in person, we shared many discussions usually about German wines. He took amazingly detailed notes. This bottle was opened among people who knew him and shared with others with a toast. AP 2 602 041 008 03. Bought on release at a local wine store in Moreland Hills, Ohio (since changed ownership and moved). The cork came out easily enough. Medium golden in color. The nose took a minute to blow off some bottle age, then showed nicely. A slight diesel note along with wet rocks and slight pineapple. On the palate,
10% Gewurztraminer, 30% Pinot Blanc, 30% Pinot Gris, 30% Riesling. This is made in the traditional method. It does not appear to be labelled as Cremant. Light silvery/yellow/white/gold in color. Very pale. A nice head of medium sized bubbles. The nose is nice with a bit of seltzer and slight lemon. On the palate, this has slight lime peel with some juniper berry (Gin) and other herbals. Not a lot of depth but very refreshing. Slightly short on the finish. This is easy drinking sparkling wine. Dry and very food friendly. At $16, this is a nice value.
This is the first vintage that Trimbach made a wine from this vineyard. Light golden in color. Great nose. There is a bit of orange peel along with minerals and a salinity on the nose. It is big right from the start. The palate takes a bit of air to get going. A relatively viscous texture. The wine is dry. Tight peaches eventually show more expressive peach along with minerals (crushed limestone). There is some warmth on the wine. Screw Capped. Light golden in color. Upon opening there are a slight amount of fine bubbles. It appears to be trapped CO2 which blows of quickly. No harm, no foul. The nose is great with green apples, slight wet rocks, slight lemon and simple syrup. On the palate, this has a fair amount of sweetness. Ripe fruit; citrus and peach. Good balance though. My first time trying this winery and I was very impressed though it had issues. Golden in color, with a slightly green hue to it. The nose smelled like fireworks or gun powder. I lovve that smell but it was a bit controversial. It also had a sweaty, wet wool sock note to it. In short, there seems to be a lot of sulfur showing here not too unlike how JJ Prums used to show a decade or so ago when the wines were young. None of that bothered me personally. There is also some lemon and wet rocks. On the palate, this has a nice texture. None of the sulfur carries thru to the palate. Lem
