Spottswoode, Cabernet Sauvignon

2024 marks the 20th vintage for Spottswoode’s Lyndenhurst label. The original goal is still the same: use all five Bordeaux varietals and pull fruit from the estate as well as other exceptional Napa vineyards, all of which are organically grown. In doing so this wine allows for, “a broader expression of Napa Valley, while applying the same philosophy that shapes our Estate Cabernet,” says winemaker Aron Weinkauf. The 20th iteration is a bit more fruit forward than past bottling’s, but this still is a classic old-school Cabernet Sauvignon made the way Napa Cab was meant to be showcased – elegant fruit, earthy tones and judicious use of oak to support the grapes. The acidity and tannins are spot on. This offers blackberry and blueberry notes, with huckleberry, light red cherry, sandalwood, leather and rose petal. Comprised of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon, there is just over 10% Merlot, and smaller amounts of Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. The wine was then aged for 20 months in mainly French oak barrels, just 35% of the barrels used being brand new. This is a beautifully crafted wine, one that shows well now, or a wine to add to your cellar to enjoy in a few years. ORIGIN: Napa Valley. ALCOHOL: 13.9%
