Having reviewed this wine for many years, quite simply, it never disappoints. It takes an old-school approach, meaning the fruit is evident, but not flashy. It is more an amalgam of various parts (fruit, wood, tannin, oak, acidity) rather than a one-trick pony. Blueberry, blackberry, black cherry, vanilla, sandalwood, charred wood with light violet, and new leather and plum command the initial sips. This is due mainly to winemaker Peter Heitz tasting through each barrel that represents specific lots within the vineyard. Each one has its own unique characteristics and is therefore rated. The final blending of these barrels pulls together the best lots of the vineyard creating a harmonious nature. The oak and vanilla notes from the French oak aging is evident and supportive, but the fruit is not masked. The tannins and the subtle acidity all have their place, making for a uniform drinking experience.
