Last week my wife and I visited La Spinetta winery in Barbaresco. Highly recommended stop if you are ever in the area. Our guide, Carlotta, did a wonderful job answering questions and guiding us thru the winery with stops in the barrel room. The tasting itself was excellent and the tasting notes on the wines can be found here: https://www.intowine.com/reviews?region=&varietal=&uid=Loren+Sonkin&score=&grade=All&vintage%5Bvalue%5D%5Byear%5D=&search=spinetta&before=5%2F16%2F2025&after=5%2F12%2F25&sort_by=created&sort_order=ASC
I first met Giorgio Rivetti over 20 years when he was making a sales trip and stopped in Cleveland, Ohio. Since then we have loved the wines. Back then the Modern/Traditionalist debate was raging in the Piedmont and La Spinetta's wines were in modern camp. That debate has more or less lost its vigour with both sides learning from the other (what a concept). That said, we were able to try a couple of the heavy hitters from the 2006 vintage and the intervening 19 years have been very kind to those wines.
While the top wines are expensive, they are worth splurging if your budget allows, but if not, the less expensive wines including the Barberas and some interesting whites hopefully are accessible. They are excellent.
