Cuvaison’s Small Lot program showcases small production of unique wines “of character and complexity and which explore different styles and techniques.” I have reviewed many of their Small Lot wines over the years and they have all excelled. Therefore, it’s exciting to once again taste a new Small Lot Chardonnay. As with all Small Lot wines, these are estate grown.
A demure nose of a spring breeze with light lemon and honeysuckle notes translates to a soft, alluring Chardonnay that offers subtle lemon zest, lime kefir, sugared almond, resin, and alpine wildflowers. The acidity is really a trickster; being coy and evasive and you don’t notice it at first. This is one of those quiet, shy wines, and unless you’re paying attention, you think it’s just another winner from Cuvaison. However, if you do pay attention - and I’m certain winemaker Steve Rogstad designed this Chardonnay to be as such - you are rewarded with additional notes of baked buttered brioche, light guava and slight papaya all intermingling with the rest of the multitude of flavors to create a beautiful Chardonnay that is meant to be savored like a fine red wine. The harmonious blending of all the elements in this wine are truly outstanding, so that one thing does not override the others and the deft balance provides a wine that will elevate your day. The aging in smaller barrels (half of which were new French oak) creates a silky textural mouth feel and aids the overall experience. Cuvaison has once again not only achieved their goal, but excelled at creating a wine of finesse, beauty and grace. ORIGIN: Napa Valley/Los Carneros. ALCOHOL: 14.4
