2016 Flora Springs Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, USA, California, Wine Review

Looking for an outstanding Napa Cabernet for $50? This one fits just fine. This is drinking just great right now but will easily last a decade. 84% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 3% Malbec,1% Petit Verdot. Purple in color. The nose is great with cassis, a bit of pencil lead, coffee and a slight dusty note. On the palate, this has medium tannins. Great balance. Plenty of cassis fruit over a dry earthy note. Good finish. This will go well with a variety of heavier dishes from BBQ to roasts.

Top 50 California Cabernet Sauvignons to Try Before You Quit Drinking (a non-dump bucket list if you will!)

In putting together a list of the top California Cabernets, there is sure to be some disagreement. I tried to include those wines that have a track record, the wineries still making great wines, those that seemed to have the commitment for the future and some personal favorites. I am sure I left some out. 1. Shafer Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon Hillside Select – It’s always hard to name the number one wine. But this has a track record that’s very long. Even in less than stellar vintages, it is an outstanding wine. They just don’t seem to make a dud. My only complaint is the price at over $200 a bottle. But, in comparison to other Napa Cabs or elsewhere in the world, this is a fair price.

This used to be a go to wine, but its been a few years, so it was a pleasure to be able to revisit this Bordeaux Blend. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec and Petite Verdot. Purple in color. The nose has cassis, cherries and spice. With air some plums come out. On the palate, this has a lovely texture. Lots of juicy black currants, with black raspberries. Firm tannins. Nice balance. Always a sound value in Napa Cabernet's. I am not sure of the exact blend this vintage, but usually, this is mostly Cab with some Merlot, Malbec and Petite Verdot. Purple in color, ruby swirls. The nose has cassis, sandalwood, slight mint and slight chocolate. On the palate, this is soft and accessible. Cassis and slight chocolate. Some depth and complexity but that should develop over the next five to seven years. Light to medium tannins. Nice finish. This is their Napa (not from a single vineyard) wine. Again, 2018 is proving to be a great vintage and this wine is no exception. This is 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that sees 70% French oak and 30% American oak barrels. It has a deep ruby color, opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, dark chocolate and cedar. Full bodied. On the palate, the cassis comes thru but the coffee is more espresso. Some underlying char. There is a lot of vibrancy and energy here. Firm tannins. Long finish.
