2013 Ravines Wine Cellars Maximilien, USA, New York, Finger Lakes, Wine Review

This is a Finger Lakes red. It is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 18% Cabernet Franc, and 17% Merlot. The label lists 13% abv. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has black cherries, cigar box, dust and sandalwood. Blind, I would guess Bordeaux. On the nose, this is soft and drinking well. Black cherries with underlying funk/earthiness. Good acidity. Slight heat on the finish. This appears to be drinking at the young side of peak. It isn't likely to get better but should stay at this level for another five to seven years. It will work well with stews and casseroles.

Washington state makes some excellent Merlots and "Right Bank" blends. This is another case in point. The wine is a blend of 55% Merlot, 36% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 9% Cabernet Franc. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is classic and enticing. Black cherries, cassis, bell pepper, chocolate, and spice. Nice texture. Great balance. On the palate, at age eleven, this is showing a nice maturity. perhaps just on the younger side of fully mature. This is a "Bordeaux Blanc" styles wine from Washington state. It is 69% Sauvignon Blanc and 31% Semillon. Very impressive and a dead ringer for a Bordeaux white in style and quality. Light golden in color. The nose has apples, wax, sweet herbs, minerality and a touch of cedar. Light to medium bodied. Nice texture. On the palate, apples, slight citrus, wax with underlying minerality. Fresh and lively. Good acidity. Long finish. Versatile. This is a blend of 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 25% Malbec, and 12% Cabernet Franc. Medium deep purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is dusty with cassis, cherries, spice, slight tobacco and slight milk chocolate. Medium bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, cassis with some black cherries with underlying spice and slight char. This drinks nicely on its own but will work better with food. Lamb stew would be a nice choice. Drink over the next five to seven years.

A few months ago, we reviewed the Cabernet Sauvignon from the vintage and vineyard, so it was nice to go back and taste the Cab Franc. While not quite at that level, it is quite good. Purple in color. The nose has black cherries, cigar tobacco and cedar. On the palate, this has a lush but sinewy texture. Lots of black cherry fruit. Some depth. Good balance. Medium tannins. Nice length. This should continue to mature and may improve a bit. It works well on its own but better with food. Roasts or casseroles go well.

First time trying this winery. This is a blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 5% Malbec, 5% Petit Verdot and 5% Cabernet Franc from Washington. Inky purple in color, slight ruby swirls, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, spice, and slight char. Medium to full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, this is not super ripe. Black cherries with a mint/herbal note that is nice. Nice finish. This is nice on its own, but better with food. This would be a nice wine with a grilled Portabella sandwich. Drink over the next seven to ten years.
