2009 Maison Ilan Charmes-Chambertin Aux Charmes Hautes, France, Burgundy, Wine Review

Crazy history on this winery but I am not going into that here. This particular bottle was very nice. Deep ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, spice, and slight smoke. Maybe a hint of funk. Medium bodied with slight tannins. On the palate, this is mature and drinking well. Cherries, slight rhubarb and earthy undertones. Good acidity. Nice finish. This should continue to drink well for another eight to ten years. Lamb chops would work well.

There is a lot of controversy about this American producer. I won't go into the here except to say, all the wines I personally purchased and opened so far have been at or above expectations. Pop and pour. Light ruby in color, slightly hazy which is not uncommon in Burgundies. The nose is very nice. Earthy with slight mushrooms, cherries, slight cranberry notes and just a bit of funk. Medium bodied with tart acidity (in a good way). On the palate, nice cherry fruit with underlying earthiness and slight mushrooms. Still on the youthful side of full maturity. Red/brown in color, mostly clear and bright. It does look slightly older than expected, but just a bit. The nose shows fresh strawberries, some cherries, slight clay. It is a persistent nose although much more "feminine". Soft texture. On the palate, cherries and sour cherries. Plenty to depth and complexity. Good energy. Nice finish. This is drinking very well and at age 13 it seems very close to peak. Drink over the next five to seven years. It is nice on its own but better with foods. It went well with assorted flat bread "pizzas".

These wines don't seem to get the respect that other Bourgogne's get and that is a shame. This was delicious. It is more understated, but that is not a bad thing in Burgundy. Light ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with cranberries, rhubarb, cherries and slight char. Medium bodied. A bit riper on the palate with cherries and slight rhubarb. Light tannins. Sour/tart cherries on the finish. This works better with food than on its own. Sweet and sour Pork would work well.

Splendid bottle consumed while still youthful but showing some maturity. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is great with cherries, macerated cherries, slight earthiness, just a hint of oak spice. Medium to full bodied. Layers of cherries, black cherries, funk and spice. Light but present tannins. Yes, some funk and oak but overall very clean. Enough fruit to finish the job in another five years, but great now. Long finish. Contemplative on its own, this will work well with food as well. Anything from roasted duck to Kung Pao Chicken. This should easily go another f
