2006 Pio Cesare Barolo, Italy, Piedmont, Wine Review

This was tasted blind among a group of Cabernet based wines. Upon opening this was off a bit, perhaps showing some oxidation. However, with about 30 minutes of air, it really came back strong. Purple in color, opaque but flat. The nose has black cherries, cedar, earthiness and dust. Soft texture. Firm tannins. On the palate, this has depth and complexity. A bigger in style Barolo. Black cherries and spice. Good acidity. Long finish. This will benefit from getting some air at this point if just to blow off bottle stink and revive a bit. It worked great with a Portobello Quesadilla. Drink over the next ten years.

This is another mid-tier Barolo that savvy shoppers should be on the lookout for when it goes on sale. These wines, especially in top vintages are really excellent. This one was picked up for $42 which is great for a Barolo of this quality. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose has cherries, rose, and roasted herbs. Medium bodied. On the palate, this still has firm tannins. It opens more with air. Cherries over a scorched earth with nice layering. Great balance. Very elegant. Long finish. Barolo's, like most wines, are available in wide price points and quality levels. Savvy shoppers can often find some of the mid-range producers at less expensive pricing and that can be a nice buying opportunity. This is one that fits into that category. It cost about $30 just a few years ago. It was young and needed some time, but for this class of Barolo, ten years is a good time to check in. And this is drinking very nicely now. This is a more accessible style of Barolo. Ruby in color with slight browning (normal even in a young Barolo). Clear and bright. The nose has cherries, anise, cranberries, and a very slight floral quality. Medium to full bodied. Very firm tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, cherries and slight rhubarb note with underlying char and slight anise. Long finish. This was a group favorite at a recent wine tasting group of Barolo's. It is still somewhat tight and needed some air. Ruby in color, slightly orange at the rim. The nose has some volatile acidity but perhaps just enough to raise the aromatics. Ir has raspberries, dust, and slight rose petals. On the palate, this has firm tannins. This is at the beginning stages of being ready to drink. It probably should have been decanted, but, so it goes. Deep ruby (dark for Barolo) in color. The nose is really interesting with cherries, soy sauce, slight tar and anise. On the palate, this has firm tannins. Black cherry and cherry fruit with a nice char underneath. Good acidity.
