2006 Parusso Barolo Mariondino, Italy, Piedmont, Wine Review

This is another mid-tier Barolo that savvy shoppers should be on the lookout for when it goes on sale. These wines, especially in top vintages are really excellent. This one was picked up for $42 which is great for a Barolo of this quality. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose has cherries, rose, and roasted herbs. Medium bodied. On the palate, this still has firm tannins. It opens more with air. Cherries over a scorched earth with nice layering. Great balance. Very elegant. Long finish. This is close to peak but should do another ten to twelve years. A great match with pasta in a cream sauce.

Barolo's, like most wines, are available in wide price points and quality levels. Savvy shoppers can often find some of the mid-range producers at less expensive pricing and that can be a nice buying opportunity. This is one that fits into that category. It cost about $30 just a few years ago. It was young and needed some time, but for this class of Barolo, ten years is a good time to check in. And this is drinking very nicely now. This bottle was bought at auction although there were no overt signs of poor storage. Tasted over two days. It was good, but we had hoped for more. Garnet in color, mostly clear. The nose has cherries, slight tar and dust. Not very big on the nose. Medium bodied. Tannins mostly resolved although slight tannins remain. On the palate, there are cherries and slight sour cherries. One dimensional. On Day 2 a brown sugar note emerges. This can often mean heat damage in its life or in this case, maybe just old age. This is a more accessible style of Barolo. Ruby in color with slight browning (normal even in a young Barolo). Clear and bright. The nose has cherries, anise, cranberries, and a very slight floral quality. Medium to full bodied. Very firm tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, cherries and slight rhubarb note with underlying char and slight anise. Long finish. Vietti makes some great value wines and some top Barolos. This one is their entry level Barolo and it is a very nice value and a very nice Barolo! At age 19 from a great vintage, this is showing some maturity but certainly not all the way there yet. Purple in color, ruby at the rim with no browning. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, spice and tar. Medium to full bodied with light tannins. On the palate, this has a nice complexity as the layers unwind in the glass. This is an affordably priced Barolo ($30 on release) that is reasonably modern in style. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, slight floral nose and baking spice. On the palate, this is accessible if not at peak. It has nice cherry fruit. There is a fair amount of oak showing and medium firm tannins which suggests another three to five years would be beneficial (and what one should expect for a Barolo in this class).
