NV Sektkellerei Szigeti Grüner Veltliner Brut, Austria, Neusiedlersee, Wine Review

Score:
90
Grade:
A-

Labelled as a Sekt.  Pale silvery gold/green in color.  There is a nice row of small bubbles at the rim of the glass.  The mousse dissipates rapidly.  The nose is a bit soapy with light green apples.  Its much more intense on the palate with tart green apples.  Pretty crisp, this would go well with a wide variety of foods.  The tart finish livens up the palate and entices the drinker to have another sip.  At under $20, this is a nice value in sparkling wine.  A bit less fruity and more tart than a Prosecco or a Cava in the same prices range.

This is a very nice value.  It retails for $15.  Medium gold in color.  The nose has white flowers, slight lime and slight fresh asparagus.  On the palate, there is good acidity.  It has a len texture but not wimpy.  Nice lime and a lot of minerality.  Good finish.  Dry.  Very food friendly.  A perfect white for a summer night.

This has evolved nicely over the last year and seems to be in a great place right now.  Deep golden in color but still with a green tinge to it.  On the nose there is an almost Gardenia/white flower note.  Also nice minerality and slight limes.  On the palate, there is a strong mineral tone to the wine.  Very good acidity.  Lower alcohol which also makes the texture thinner but more lively.  A bit of lime peel.  Long finish.  This is very food friendly.  $20 retail.  It probably needs to be consumed by 2020 although Grüner does age well.

2003 was an extremely hot vintage across all of Europe.  The heat had two different effects on the vines.  Some of the grapes got withered and raisened from the heat.  Other vines just shut down an the grapes never got fully ripe.  And, a few places thru a combination of luck, micro-climates and hard work in the vineyard made good wines.  This wine seems to have a bit of all three of those.  Still, at age 15, it is drinking very well.  Medium deep golden in color.  The nose is sugary with apricots.  On the palate, this has nice apricot fruit.  Slightly sweet.  Not a lot of depth or complexi

This was tried from Magnum.  A Magnum retails for $15.  That is crazy.  And, you know what, it's not bad at all.  Silvery green in color.  The nose has grapefruit and slight crushed shells.  On the palate, this is clean with grapefruit notes.  Very solid and refreshing not much depth but good energy.  Food friendly.  Amazing value.

2007 Kinkead Ridge Cabernet Sauvignon, USA, Ohio River Valley, Wine Review

About 150 years ago, the Ohio River Valley was one of the top wine producing spots in the United States.  These days, the wine industry is more tourist based, but a decade ago, Kinkead Ridge was producing some excellent reds and 2007 was a great vintage (something that only happens maybe once a decade).  This one is drinking just fine right now at age 11.  Purple in color, slight ruby at the rim.  The nose shows some tobacco, cherries, and slight spice.  Slight tannins on the palate.  Cherries with some depth and layering.  Nice balance.  In short, this drinks like a ten year old Brodeaux f
