A visit to Zentato Winery

May 24th, 2025 By Loren Sonkin
# Veneto, Corvina, Corvina Blend, Trebbiano, Italy

Earlier this month I visited the Zenato winery near Lake Garda in Italy.  They make excellent Ripassos and Amarones but they also make some very interesting white wines from the Trebbiano di Lugano grape.  Our host and guide, Sonia, met us at their Santa Cristina estate and vineyard and explained quite a bit about the history of the winery and its people.  After a tour of the facilities we sat down and tried many of their wines.  Tasting notes can be found here:  https://www.intowine.com/reviews?region=&varietal=&uid=Loren+Sonkin&score=&grade=All&vintage%5Bvalue%5D%5Byear%5D=&search=zenato&before=2025-05-25&after=2025-05-15&sort_by=created&sort_order=ASC

The facility was beautiful.  Despite being a larger winery, they do a great job of paying individual attention to all of the wines.  Their portfolio goes from inexpensive to expensive (although not crazy pricing) but all that we tasted delivered above the price in terms of quality.  A nearby sales room had a wide selection of their wines for sale.

If you are ver in the Lake Garda area (southwest side), a visit here is well worth the time spent.  And, quite a few of their wines should be easily tracked down once back home.

Zenato is the owner of A.A. S. Cristina.  This wine is 100% Trebbiano di Lugana.  Silver/slight golden in color, clear and bright.  The nose is very fragrant with Lemon verbena and a chalky minerality.  Nice texture.  Nice acidity.  On the  palate, this is concentrated with good depth.  Mineral drive but also some nice lemon peel.  Long finish.  This drinks nicely on its own but will work with lighter foods.  It would be a nice pairing with grilled or baked Trout but also with  a Crab Salad.  Drink over the next few years to enjoy the vibrancy.

This is a wine made from the Trebbiano grape on the shores of Lake Garda from the Lugano DOC.  Light golden in color.  Lovely nose of tropical fruit, slight grassiness and underlying minerality.  Very Sauvginon-like.  On the palate, this is round and slightly oily.  Velvety.  Very nice texture.   NIce acidity.  Just a bit of lemony fruit with good minerality.  Nice finish.  Very food friendly and a crowd favorite.

From one of the top producers in this part of the world,  His Valpolicellas are better and more serious than most Amarones (and more expensive, too).  This is a blend of 70% Corvina,  20% Rondinella, 5% Croatina and 5% Oseleta grapes.  Purple in color, opaque and flat.  This is a dense, concentrated wine.  The nose has cherries, cedar, leather, dark chocolate and a hint of VA (just enough to raise the aromatics without being off putting).  Full bodied.  Concentrated.  Firm tannins with a lush texture.  On the palate, this is teeth staining and delicious.  Cherries, black cherries, with some
