2021 Seghesio Family Vineyards Old Vine Zinfandel, USA, California, Sonoma, Wine Review

This is a blend of 87% Zinfandel, 10% Petite Sirah, 2% Carignane, 1% Alicante Bouschet from vines averaging 75 years old. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is nice with black cherries, brambles, gravel and spice. Medium to full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, this is a middle of the road Zin. Not a monster, but not a claret either. It has depth and some complexity. Flavors of black cherries, slight cherries, spice and slight bramble. Long finish. This is great on its own and would be great with a burger off the grill. Drink over the next five to seven years.

In the winter, they stretch above the ground like old crows’ claws reaching for the sky. Amid the bright green of the groundcover and vivid yellows, reds and oranges of the flowering cover crops, one could easily mistake these black stumps for dead. But they are just dormant for now, mustering the energy to push out yet another year’s worth of fruit that will produce the liquid gold that old vine zinfandel can be.

The winemaker's notes indicate that "the finished blend is 85% Zinfandel with 7% Carignan, 4% Cinsault and bits and bobs of Grand Noir, Petite Sirah, Alicante Bouschet and other field-blended varieties." Overall, this is pretty consistent with prior years. Purple/garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, raspberries, char and slight bramble. Medium bodied. Good acidity. One of the old guard from Napa. This is their basic Zin which is actually a blend of 83% Zinfandel, 10% Petite Sirah, 3% Alicante, and 4% mixed reds. This is a fine value. Ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has bramble with a peppery note. Medium bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, cherries and raspberries. Easy finish. This is drinkable without requiring contemplation. Drink over the next couple of years. A nice wine with foods off grill.

This drinks like an old school Zinfandel. It took some time to open and then drank quite well. It is not a fruit bomb. Deep ruby in color. Really a very interesting color for a Zinfandel. On the nose this has nice cherries with a peppery quality to it. Very concentrated. On the palate, this is also concentrated. Layers of cherries, black cherries and warm earth. Some pepper on the finish. This is great on its own or with food as well. Seems like it should last a decade as its "claret" qualities come out. A pleasure to taste. Better on day 2.
