2021 Bruno Giacosa Nebbiolo d'Alba Valmaggiore, Italy, Piedmont, Wine Review

Some call this wine a "junior Barolo", but that is not really accurate. Of course, made from the same Nebbiolo grape, but really a different wine. At least Giacosa's. Garnet in color with some purple hues, mostly clear and bright. The nose enticing with cherries, dust, slight floral notes and spice. Medium bodied. Firm tannins. Great acidity. On the palate, this is delicious. Yes, there are firm tannins, but this is drinking well especially with a bit of air. Flavors of cherries, slight cranberries with a bit of earthiness and tar. Long finish. This is nice on its own but better with food. It went well with a Mushroom Pizza. Drink over the next ten to fifteen years.

The last Bruno Giacosa was one of the premier producers in Barolo. Sadly, he passed away a couple years ago. The top wines he made were given a red label and Riserva status. This bottle is still youthful but it is drinking great. Purple, ruby rim. Still looks quite young. Tight nose; cherries, slight tea leaves and dried roses. A bit of tar. Just the slightest bit of VA with air, which is good as it ends up bringing out the aromatics. Delicious on the palate. Tight layers of cherries, cherry candy, anise and earth. Firm but manageable tannins. Finish goes on forever. Needs anot

Decanted for sediment, this is still a bit young but no harm opening now. Deep garnet with slight bricking, clear and bright. Classic nose of cherries, slight dried cherries, some floral/rose notes and slight tar. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, this is showing nice complexity. Lots of cherries, some dried cherries, with some underlying forest floor, mushrooms and tar. Long finish. This drinks better with food. Mushroom pizza is a great choice. Drink over the next fifteen to twenty years.

Great showing for this wine. Light ruby with slight orange/brown near the edges. Mostly clear and bright. The nose is classic with cherries, slight dried cherries, roses and slight tar. Medium to full bodied with medium tannins. On the palate, this is complex and delicious. Cherries, dried cherries with underlying char. Layers of flavors that unwind in the glass. Great balance. Long finish. This is close to peak at this point, but no hurry. It should be at this level for ten or more years. Better with food. A perfect match for a mushroom or truffle dish.

I was looking for a nice Barolo to take to a friends dinner party. This was in the cellar and I neglected to check my own notes for this wine. It was just as tight as a bottle opened last May. It really needs time and to be decanted. That said, with some vigorous swirling it did open up and provided an enjoyable experience. Ruby in color. The nose takes some time but eventually show some cherries, roses and slight tar. On the palate, this has tight layering which has cherries, earth and slight forest floor notes. Nice acidity. Good finish. Went very well with some stuffed Portabel

This was outstanding if not at the single vineyard level either. Medium ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is pretty with cherries, tar and smoke. On the palate, this has cherries, sour cherries and some underlying forest floor. Medium tannins. Some complexity. It was served pop and pour and really improved after an hour. Nice acidity. It worked well with a spicy eggplant but also ravioli in a lemon butter sauce. It seems to be about as good as it is going to get but no hurry. I would probably recommend giving it a couple/few hours in a decanter prior to serving.
