2020 Cayuse Syrah Wallah Wallah Special #14, USA, Washington, Wine Review

Bottled only in Magnum. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is classic Washington Syrah. Black raspberries, char, slight burnt rubber, slight chocolate and spice. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Nicely balanced. On the palate, flavors of black raspberries, slight chocolate, char, black pepper and slight roasted meats. Long finish. This is complex and deep. Still young but moving along. Drink over the next ten to twenty years. It will work well with grilled or Roasted foods (not seafood).

Merlot vs Syrah: Which Varietal Blooms Brightest in Washington?

Say “Oregon” and Pinot Noir comes to mind. Argentina? Malbec. And who can say “Shiraz” without thinking of Australia? But what grape will Washington wine country claim as it’s own as it expands in production and popularity? There are so many red treasures in this state, sometimes it is hard to say. But after my luscious Saturday tasting, I’m thinking Syrah and Merlot may duke it out for the prize.

This has really opened nicely since I last tried it. Still young, but delicious. Perhaps the best wine from Washington that I have had. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, boysenberries, black cherries, black olives and tarragon. No burnt rubber that sometimes shows up in Washington Syrah. Full bodied. On the palate, the black and purple fruits dominate. Black pepper. Slight black olive with underlying minerals/rocks. Wonderful lush but fluid texture. Long finish. Delicious. One of the best Syrahs being made anywhere. Purple in color with a slight ruby hue, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, slight burnt rubber, black olives, black pepper and slight bacon fat. Full bodied. Velvety texture. Juicy acidity. On the palate, lots of black raspberry fruit with some black olive notes and char. Deep and complex. Light tannins. Long finish. This is just getting near maturity. It drinks great on its own and would work well with beef stew or chili. Drink over the next ten to fifteen years.

Another top wine from Cayuse. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, black cherries, burnt rubber (in a good way), black olives and iron. What a great texture. Juicy and velvety. On the palate, the black raspberry dominates with some underlying minerality and a hint of funk/musk. Long finish. This is still young but chugging along. It may still improve a bit over the next few years and then be good for another 15 after that.

Its not often I get to enjoy a wine this old from Washington so this was a treat. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has black rapsberries, spice, slight violet, minerals and slight bacon fat. On the palate, this has plums, black olives and black raspberries. Still drinking youthfully, it didnt seem 15 years old. Maybe seven. Deep and complex but delicious and gulpable. Nice finish. I am not sure this gets better but it should continue to mature. very impressive wine.
