2020 Cayuse Syrah Bionic Frog, USA, Washington, Walla Walla, Wine Review

One of the best labels going. And, the wine is excellent as well. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is deep and complex. Aromas of black raspberries, black pepper, charred earth, and slight wild herbs. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Great balance. On the palate, this is young but open and delicious. Flavors of black raspberries, roasted spices, slight meaty note and black pepper. Long finish. If drinking now, give it some air but this wine should drink well for twenty years. It is great on its own and would work wonderfully with a Lamb Stew but also Roasted Butternut Squash.

One of the best Syrahs being made anywhere. Purple in color with a slight ruby hue, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, slight burnt rubber, black olives, black pepper and slight bacon fat. Full bodied. Velvety texture. Juicy acidity. On the palate, lots of black raspberry fruit with some black olive notes and char. Deep and complex. Light tannins. Long finish. This is just getting near maturity. It drinks great on its own and would work well with beef stew or chili. Drink over the next ten to fifteen years.

This has really opened nicely since I last tried it. Still young, but delicious. Perhaps the best wine from Washington that I have had. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black raspberries, boysenberries, black cherries, black olives and tarragon. No burnt rubber that sometimes shows up in Washington Syrah. Full bodied. The cork broke on opening so this was decanted thru a filter. It was interesting to drink side by side with the Cailloux Vineyard which was pop and pour. This opened up first as expected but then the played back and forth over the evening. In the end, I liked this a tad more though they were basically even. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has cedar, black raspberries and rocks. On the palate, this is complex with black raspberries, slight cedar, a bit of pepper and slight earthy notes. Nice texture. Good balance. Its not often I get to enjoy a wine this old from Washington so this was a treat. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has black rapsberries, spice, slight violet, minerals and slight bacon fat. On the palate, this has plums, black olives and black raspberries. Still drinking youthfully, it didnt seem 15 years old. Maybe seven. Deep and complex but delicious and gulpable. Nice finish. I am not sure this gets better but it should continue to mature. very impressive wine.

Another top wine from Cayuse. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, black cherries, burnt rubber (in a good way), black olives and iron. What a great texture. Juicy and velvety. On the palate, the black raspberry dominates with some underlying minerality and a hint of funk/musk. Long finish. This is still young but chugging along. It may still improve a bit over the next few years and then be good for another 15 after that.
