2018 Levo Under The Gun Petite Sirah, USA, California, Paso Robles, Wine Review

This is a blend of 78% Petite Sirah, 18% grenache, and the remainder Syrah and Roussanne. It is a big, bold wine that is drinking well. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, gravel, black cherries, and spices. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, lots of black cherry fruit with some black raspberries and char. Long finish. This is nice on its own and would work well with meats or poultry off the grill. Drink over the next six to ten years.

I am told this is a blend of 63% Petite Sirah, 22% Grenache, and 15% Syrah which makes me wonder how they can call it a Petite Sirah? In California a wine needs at least 75% of the varietal if it is listed on the label. In any event, the wine is quite nice. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has black raspberries, gravel, and roasted herbs. Full bodied. Light to medium tannins. On the palate, black raspberries with char and a bit of gravel. Good finish. I absolutely loved this wine. And for $32, this is a great value. What I like about Petite Syrah is that it is not as boisterous as Syrah but in a similar vein. The two grapes are not (at least closely) related. Many times it seems Petite producers try to "correct" for this and get too much ripeness. It is a fine line, but this wine really does a wonderful job of expressing the true qualities of Petite. It does need some air and time to open, so keep that in mind if drinking now. Pallisades is one of the great Petite Sirah vineyards and Carlisle really nailed it with the 2016 vintage. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with boysenberries, gravel, blueberries and spice. Full bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, this is delicious. Boysenberries, black cherries, blueberries with underlying gravel. Clean. Long finish. This is drinking well now but still young and may improve. Drink over the next fifteen years. Nice on its own, this would work well with grilled meats.

Great showing for this wine. One of the best Petite Sirah vineyards! This is inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with boysenberries, gravel, violets and spice. Full bodied. Lots of energy. This is big but not over the top (especially for Petite). Lots of black raspberry fruit over a gravelly bed. Some peppery notes too. Medium tannins. Long finish. This should continue to evolve for another five to seven years and drink well for ten after that. It is also delicious today. Drinks great on its own, this will work with roasted veggies or meats.

Obviously young, but this is one of the best Petite Sirah's made in Napa. Inky purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has boysenberries, char, and spice. Full bodied. On the palate, the boysenberry over char comes thru. This will need time. Ideally at least another decade but at least five to seven. It should drink well for twenty after that. Delicious. This will drink well on its own but a nice choice for Indian food or grilled meats off the grill.
