2018 14 Hands Rosé, USA, Washington, Wine Review

This is from a can although it appears they also sell this in bottles. It is a blend of Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault and Grenache. It has a reasonably deep pink/ruby color. The nose has cherries and raspberries. On the palate, this is easy drinking and refreshing. Flavors of cherries and strawberries. No tannins. Ready to drink now. Worked well with salty fried food but should go with a wide variety of foods. The trend of wine cans is catching on. For wines that are made for now, this is a convenient, non-breakable alternative. I hope more wineries go this route.

Merlot vs Syrah: Which Varietal Blooms Brightest in Washington?

Say “Oregon” and Pinot Noir comes to mind. Argentina? Malbec. And who can say “Shiraz” without thinking of Australia? But what grape will Washington wine country claim as it’s own as it expands in production and popularity? There are so many red treasures in this state, sometimes it is hard to say. But after my luscious Saturday tasting, I’m thinking Syrah and Merlot may duke it out for the prize.

Cabernet Sauvignon – Old Vines in Washington State

Zillah, Washington State, 1994. I was completely disoriented. It was hot. I was standing in a dry, semi – desert terrain, but looking west, I saw glacier capped Mt. Rainier. The roads weren’t paved, the wineries badly marked. Tasting rooms consisted of folding tables in the corners of barrel rooms, or in the family rec room with 1970’s shag carpeting. Often, I had to ring an outdoor bell to bring someone in from the fields to pour tastes.

This is always a great value from Oregon/Washington producer Sineann. Peter Rossback makes a lot of a wide variety of wines. Once he is done, he makes a couple of different blends with the leftovers. The Abondante is the better of the two (the other is labelled Red Wine). This sells for around $22 and comes screw capped! This vintage is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet and Zinfandel. Deep ruby in color. The nose has cherries, black cherries, slight chocolate and char. On the palate, this is medium bodied. Drinking well right now. Light tannins. Good finish. This is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and a little Syrah from three different vineyards in the Red Mountain AVA or Washington state. At 12 years from vintage it seems to be in a great spot although it should have at least 5 more years before starting to slowly go downhill. Purple in color. The nose is nice with cherries, coffee, leather, slight chocolate, cassis and tobacco. On the palate, this is still fresh with lot of fruit; cherries and black raspberries.
