2016 Sebastien Dampt Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons, France, Burgundy, Wine Review

From an excellent producer who is still affordable in Chablis. These are not what I think of as "traditional" wines, but they are quite good and certainly not "modern" if that would be the opposite of traditional. Light golden in color. The nose has some green apples more of a lemony quality. There is a slight chalkiness to it, but more spice. Good not great acidity. On the palate, this is more about lemons with some underlying spice. Nice finish. Still young, this may yet improve a bit more. Presuming no oxidation issues (and I have not run into any with this producer), this should easily go ten more years and likely more. It will work well with sea food or pasta in a cream sauce.

As prices for white Burgundy in general and Chablis in particular continue to rise, it is nice to find still affordable producers making great wine. This is one such producer. the wine is made in a concrete egg and sees no oak. Light golden in color with some green hues, clear and bright. The nose is nice with crushed shells, slight chalk/minerality and lemon. Medium bodied. Lean and racy texture. Good acidity. On the palate, lemons and crushed shells. Long finish. Dampt makes some of the best value in Chablis. With the price of the top two or three wineries going crazy, these are excellent wines that are affordable. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has great minerality/crushed shells and just a hint of lemon. Clean. On the palate, this is crisp and tasty. Crushed shells. Long finish. This is nice on its own but would be perfect with oysters or clams. Drink over the next ten to twelve years.

Chablis continues to be an excellent source or white Burgundy especially when considering the price and the premox issues. While Chablis is not immune on either issue, it is a bit better on both. This is a newer-ish producer making some great wines and reasonable pricing. Light silvery gold in color. The nose is very nice with green apples and chalk. Very clean. In the world of Chablis, there are some exceptional producers but only a couple of those are "affordable". Sebastian Dampt is one of them and that is especially true of the 1er Crus. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has green apples, slight grapefruits, slight gunpowder and spice. Full bodied. Excellent acidity. On the palate, this is still a bit tight but opens quickly in the glass. Green apples, grapefruits and slight char. Long finish. Delicious on its own, this is even better with food. Of course, oysters would work very well, but so does a fruit salad. Drink
