2015 Sbragia Family Merlot Home Ranch, USA, California, Sonoma, Dry Creek Valley, Wine Review

This is the home winery from longtime Beringer winemaker, Ed Sbragia. This is an accessible Merlot that is drinking well right now. Purple in color. The nose has cherries, slight tobacco and slight chocolate. On the palate, there is not a lot of depth but the cherries are strong. A bit of a char underneath. Some tobacco on the finish. It seems like it should probably be drunk in the next few years. It will work well with burgers or pasta and has enough flavor to drink on its own. It has 95% Merlot and 5% Petite Sirah.

For 20 years Quivira Vineyards has produced a Provencal-style Rosé with Grenache as the lead variety. Additionally there is also 20% Primitivo, and smaller amounts of Counoise, Petite Sirah and Mourvèdre. There is soft fruit and soft acidity here, a wine that doesn’t overshadow any companion foods. Strawberry, stone, fruits, light citrus, black cherry, rhubarb, and subtle lemon lime fill out the palate. This is not a wine that announces itself and takes control, this is a subtle wine that is meant to be part of the meal.

Very nice showing for this. Seems to be just about at peak, of course, noting that Zinfandel matures earlier and Petite Sirah later. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has boysenberries, black cherries, raspberries along with some leather and minerality. Medium bodied. On the palate, this has a nice complexity. Also very tasty. Layers of fruit (black and red raspberries) with some underlying minerality. Nice finish. This should have another five to seven more years and probably more. This has 80% Zinfandel, 16% Petite Sirah, and 4% Carignane. It is drinking just wonderfully right now. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, dust, leather, slight earthiness and cherries. On the palate, this is fresh with vibrant fruit and light tannins. Black raspberries, slight peppery notes and a nice warm earthiness to it. Good balance. Nice finish. Just a lovely wine. It won't get better but should continue to mature and evolve over the next decade. Will work with almost any food at this point.

Ulises Valvez was one of the great American success stories in the wine world. An immigrant to this country, he built his vineyard and winery into a top notch winery. Sadly, he passed away a couple of years ago at far too young of an age. His winery carries on. This is a Zinfandel blend that also has 17% Peite Sirah and 5% Grenache. The vineyard was originally planted in 1888 and hand farmed by Ulises Valdez since 1988. There are some very old vines. Purple in color.
