2014 Domaine Pascal Cotat Sancerre Les Monts Damnés, France, Loire Valley, Wine Review

Both Francis and Pascal Cotat wineries make some of the best Sauvignon Blancs in the world. These are age worthy white wines that are truly unique expressions. This one, while still young, was singing with a bit of air. Light golden in color with some green hues. The nose has chalk, gun powder, and pear notes. Just a hint of caramel. On the palate, this has a whiff of sweetness; just ever so slightly off dry. The pears carry thru and the gun powder turns more smoky. This is deep and complex. It went quite well with a creamy tomato soup. This likely will continue to improve for another five to seven years and be wonderful drinking for a decade after that.

Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé: Wonderful Summer Sauvignon Blancs

On the eastern end of the Loire Valley in France sit the two communes of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé where arguably the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world is produced. For many, this is the true home for this grape. While new world producers in California, New Zealand and elsewhere are creating excellent fruit laden Sauvignon Blanc’s, the producers in the Loire Valley excel in complex mineral driven versions of Sauvignon Blanc. Among all of the regions of the Loire utilizing this grape, the reputations of Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé are the best.

A lot of people question whether cellaring white wine makes any sense. This is one white that not only lasts but improves in the cellar. At 13 years from vintage, this showed wonderfully with nothing "past prime" at all. Medium golden in color, clear and bright. The nose has a nice minerality to it with plenty of depth. Also come melon (cantaloupe) and a bit of salinity. On the palate, this is complex. Slightly oily texture. Notes of minerals, sea shells, but nice melon and peach fruit. These wines are some of my favorite expressions of Sauvignon Blanc from anywhere. At age 9, this is still on the young side but drinking well. Green/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose has limes, minerals, salinity and slight hay notes. Medium bodied. Crisp acidity. On the palate, tart limes, slight yellow grapefruit with underlying minerals. Long finish. Delicious. This drinks well on its own and will work well with seafood or lighter salads. Drink over the next ten to twelve years.

Seems to be in a bit of a dumb phase right now. Don't get me wrong, it is quite good but not as good as it can be. Light golden in color. The nose has some grapefruit and nice minerality. A bit of salinity. On the palate, this is good but not breaking out any complexities. Nice grapefruit and minerals. Good texture. Excellent with food. As good it is today, I would hold for a year or two or 8 and patience will be rewarded.

This wine is just starting to come into its own. A gorgeous showing for this Sauvignon Blanc from France. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is pretty with melon, peaches and minerality. Medium bodied. Crisp yet welcoming at the same time. Great balance. Depth and complexity. The peach notes are stronger on the palate along with a chalkiness. Long finish. Just delicious. This sill work great with seafood or lighter pasta dishes and of course, on its own. No hurry, this seems like it is in middle age and will easily got another ten to twelve years.
