2013 Château L'Evangile, France, Bordeaux, Pomerol, Wine Review

This is 87% Merlot and 13% Cabernet Franc from the difficult 2013 vintage. Ruby/purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose cherries, chocolate, tobacco and spice. Nice texture. Medium bodied. Firm tannins. On the palate, black cherries with some cherries with some clay and spice notes. The finish is a bit clipped. A very nice effort for the vintage. It may not have enough fruit to outlast the tannins. drink over the next ten years. Nice on its own, but better with food. A nice wine to open with Ahi Tuna off the grill.

Cheval Blanc: The “First Growth” of the Right Bank

When the wines of Bordeaux were classified in 1855 all of the wines were from the Left Bank of the Gironde River. In fact, with the exception of Haut Brion, which is from Graves, all of the wines classified were from the Medoc. Since that time, the winemaking areas of Bordeaux have greatly expanded. Some of the best wines in Bordeaux are now made on the Right Bank including some of the most expensive wines in the entire world. While there is no official classification system for all of Bordeaux, there can be no doubt that if such a system was implemented today, at least a few Right Bank wineries would make the list. Perhaps no winery deserves the mythical first growth of the Right Bank title more than Cheval Blanc. In fact, the wines of Saint Émilion, a commune on the Right Bank, were ranked in 1955 and Cheval Blanc was one of two that received the highest rank of Premier Grand Cru Classé (A). Those rankings were redone in 1969, 1986, and 1996 and most recently in 2006 (although that ranking is the subject of an ongoing legal dispute not relevant to Cheval Blanc) and Cheval Blanc has remained a First Growth in every subsequent ranking.

Much better and cleaner than another bottle tried a couple years ago. Both were bought on release at the same time. A right bank wine from the great 2005 vintage. The vineyard is 95% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc (unsure about the specific vintage in bottle). Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is nice with cherries, black cherries, cedar, chocolate, slight tobacco and just a bit of smoke. Consumed over two days, this was better/more open on day 2. Full bodied. This wine is shut down right now. It needs time to develop and will no doubt be spectacular, but not on this evening. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is nice with black cherries and spice. With air, a bit of chocolate and tobacco emerge. Full bodied. Wonderful texture.

My first time trying this producer. It is their second wine. A blend of 73.1% Merlot, 24.3% Cabernet Franc, and 2.6% Petit Verdot. Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is nice with clay, and cherries. Medium bodied. Light tannins. The palate has cherries with slight black cherries. This is open and drinking well today. Some complexity but mostly a tasty wine for immediate drinking over the next couple of years. A nice wine with pizza. Unfortunately, like most Pomerol wines, it is a bit expensive to be a daily drinker.

Purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. This is a blend of 80% Merlot, 15% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon according to the winemaker's notes. The nose is nice with black cherries, smoke, plums, chocolate and cedar. Firm tannins. Full bodied. On the palate, this is very tight. It unwinds a bit in the glass to show cherries, black cherries, and slight chocolate. Some depth. Nice finish. Certainly, this seems at least a bit shut down at this point. Best to hold this for five to eight more years, then drink for ten to twelve after that.
