2004 Tablas Creek Esprit de Beaucastel, USA, California, Paso Robles, Wine Review

This was possibly the oldest EdB I have had and it was great. Showing a bit of age but certainly not over the top. Pop and pour, it improved on opening and then held constant for the evening. Purple in color, some bricking at the rim. The nose has cherries, some black cherries and baking spices. On the palate, this has a nice texture. Still lively but balanced acidity. Cherries with a bit of earthiness and the baking spice finishes the palate. I doubt it gets better from here but it certainly seems like it would have at least five more years before a slow decline. This will go great with fowl dishes or even roasted vegetables.

2008 Hospice du Rhone Events: Highs & Lows of American Rhone-style Wines Tasted

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. The 16th annual Hospice du Rhone events in Paso Robles, California from May 1 to 3, 2008 was an opportunity to consider Rhone-style wines from a fresh perspective. Unlike most tasting opportunities, these events included Rhone-style wines from the Rhone Valley itself (51 wineries), elsewhere in France (4 wineries) as well as from Spain (4 wineries), Australia (17 wineries), South Africa (6 wineries), Chile (2 wineries), Argentina (1 winery) and the United States. The American wines were mostly from California (144 wineries), but a few examples from Arizona (2 wineries) and Washington State (5 wineries) were also included. While this is a California-dominated event, and while many of the Rhone Valley’s best producers aren’t represented, there is still sufficient European and other entries to make for interesting comparisons and contrasts. The events included two general tastings and a series of focused seminars.

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we discussed the white Rhone style wines offered at the 2008 Rhone Rangers tasting event at Fort Mason in San Francisco on March 18. This month we turn to the reds, of which we tasted 50. Among those we tasted were some old favorites and some wineries or bottlings with which we were not yet familiar. We don’t pretend that we tasted a representative group of wines, because our sample was skewed to wines we have loved in the past and others about which we have heard positive comments.

The top wine in the Tablas creek stable. A blend of 60% Mourvedre, 30% Grenache and 10% Syrah. Tasted along side the 03, this is more animale and a bit darker fruits. Both were stunning. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has a fair amount of barnyard/brett. If tasting blind, I would have guessed older Beaucastel. There is also plenty of plums and black raspberry fruit. On the palate, this has light tannins left. Layers of plums, black cherries and black raspberries with plenty of earthiness. Great balance and energy. Long finish. This is the top wine that Tablas Creek makes. It is a blend of 69% Mourvedre, 21% Grenache, 7% Syrah, and 3% Counoise. Wow. At age 18, this is gorgeous. Bought on release and decanted for sediment just prior to serving. Still vibrant and drinking youthfully if closing in on peak. The nose has plums, black cherries, a slight char and a bit of earthiness. Full bodied. On the palate, this layered and complex. Layers of black cherries, plums, earth and spice.
