2004 Domenico Clerico Barolo Ciabot Mentin Ginestra, Italy, Piedmont, Wine Review

Great showing for this wine. Pop and pour, it is close to fully mature but not quite. Medium ruby in color. The nose took about thirty minutes to open. Cherries, slight roses, slight menthol, tar and spice. Full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, plenty of cherry fruit, some dried cherries, underlying spice and dry earth. Lots of energy. Nice balance. Delicious. Long finish. This should easily do another ten and probably 15 more years. It drinks well on its own, but is better with food. It went nicely with a Spinach Lasagna.

This is still young but a very nice showing. It might still get a bit better but for the most part is close to peak. Ruby in color. The nose has cherries, tar, slight dried roses. Also a bit of tea. On the palate, there are fresh and dried cherries over a bit of forest floor. Good acidity. Layers unwind in the glass. Long finish. Pretty much everything one could want from this wine at 15 years from vintage. It will work well with past and meat dished but even light fol or salads.

This is at the beginning stages of being ready to drink. It probably should have been decanted, but, so it goes. Deep ruby (dark for Barolo) in color. The nose is really interesting with cherries, soy sauce, slight tar and anise. On the palate, this has firm tannins. Black cherry and cherry fruit with a nice char underneath. Good acidity. Long finish. This worked quite well with a pasta dish (duh). It should easily go another decade and closer to two. Opened and decanted for about an hour or two, this is still showing "modern" and young. That said, once we started drinking it, it evolved beautifully over the next hour. Deep ruby in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is great with cherries, licorice, slight menthol and slight dried roses. Medium to full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, lots of fresh cherry fruit with slight underlying tar and dried floral notes. Great acidity. Nice finish. This is delicious. Based on this bottle, another seven to ten years until peak. This may end up easily doing fifty years. Back

This bottle was opened and decanted for a few hours. Still young but really blossoming. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is gorgeous with cherries, roses, slight tar and slight dried cherries. On the palate, this has great cherry fruit. Light tannins. Layers of fruit, earth and dry forest floor. Complex. Long finish. Good acidity. Better with food. This continued to improve for the 2 hours or so it was opened. Still some upside but a great Barolo.

Barolo's, like most wines, are available in wide price points and quality levels. Savvy shoppers can often find some of the mid-range producers at less expensive pricing and that can be a nice buying opportunity. This is one that fits into that category. It cost about $30 just a few years ago. It was young and needed some time, but for this class of Barolo, ten years is a good time to check in. And this is drinking very nicely now.
