2019 Schiopetto Rivarossa, Italy, Venezia-Giulia IGT, Wine Review

This is a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon from northeast Italy. Purple in color with some ruby hues. The nose is nice with black cherries, some cherries, tobacco, slight dark chocolate and spice. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this has some depth and complexity. Young, of course, but drinking well. Flavors of black cherries with some forest floor, spice and char. Nice finish. This should drink well for the next eight to twelve years. This would be a nice wine to pair with Fried Chicken and of course, pasta. A very nice value in red wine.

This is a blend of 50% Merlot, and 50% Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso from northeast Italy. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is powerful (and nice) with black cherries, black raspberries, tobacco, and spice. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Great acidity. On the palate, this is delicious. Plenty of structure but still accessible. Flavors of black raspberries, black cherries with tobacco, spice and char. Long finish.

Le Marche (pronounced lay Mar-kay) is a region in central Italy that borders the Adriatic Sea to the east and the Apennines to the west. Le Marche borders Emilia-Romagna to the north, Tuscany, Umbria and Lazio to the west, and Abruzzi to the south. The terrain is mostly hills and mountains once you get away from the coast. The area has a long history matching most of the historic conquests of Italy: it was occupied by the Gaul’s, colonized by the Romans, later it was invaded by the Goths and Lombard’s, then by Charlemagne. It was then mostly a papal state before finally being annexed in the mid-1800’s by the kingdom of Italy.

So, are you feeling lucky? That phrase goes thru my head every time I think about buying a natural wine. But, Radikon is one of the top producers and his Merlots have been amazing. This one is 75% Merlot and 25% Pignolo aged on its skins for 15 day and in oak for 3 years without much intervention. I just hope the kitchen sink enjoyed it as i poured it down the drain! Consumed over three days, just to punish myself. Purple in color, opaque and flat. The nose was a cross been a failed high school science experiment and the back room of a butcher shop. Ordered off the wine list at Eduardo's in Chicago (Gold Coast) for $80. A nice find except that it was so young, it really should have been decanted. It is a blend of 56% Merlot, 26% Cabernet Franc, 11% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 7% Petit Verdot. Deep ruby in color with some purple hues, mostly clear and bright. The nose is nice with black cherries, cherries, tobacco, spice and char. Full bodied. Light to medium tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, there is some varietal complexity but this is very tight. It never fully opened as the bottle was drained. That said, it was enjoyable

Great showing. This is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Aglianico from Campagna in Italy. Deep ruby in color, mostly clear and a bit flat. The nose has cherries, black cherries, dried cherries, herbal notes, forest floor and spice. Complex. Medium to full bodied. Light tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, this is complex. Lots of fresh cherries and black cherries with some tobacco, leather and spice. Long finish. This is close to or at peak. It drinks nicely on its own and will work well with many foods.
