2018 Domaine Pichot Vouvray Méthode Traditionnelle Clos Saint Mathurin, France, Loire, Wine Review

This was quite exceptional. I am quite fond of Chenin Blanc in general and Vouvray more specifically. Although sparkling Vouvrays are not in a regular rotation, I also enjoy those as well. This is 100% Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley in France. Medium golden in color with a nice mousse of lots of small bubbles. The nose is great with orange rind, green apples, and a bit of char. Medium to full bodied. Crisp acidity. On the palate, flavors green apples and a hint of hard apple cider. Long finish. This has depth and complexity. While great on its own, the "apple cider" notes really make this wine food friendly. This would be perfect with oysters or Sushi. Drink over the next three to five years. Great value.

Vouvray: A Chenin Blanc for the Ages

Among Americans, the Loire Valley is most often associated with gardens and castles and not much else. We journey the 150 kilometers southwest from Paris and take a day or two visiting Chateau de Chambord and Chenonceau, all the while enjoying the delightful flora and thinking of bygone days when princes and noblemen still roamed the cavernous halls in this ancient land. But the French know better. They know what we foreigners are just beginning to discover—that some of the most interesting, delicious, and affordable wines in the world hail from the chalky soil on which those famous castles stand.

This is Chenin Blanc from one of the top producers in Vouvray. While not to the same extent, Vouvray has dealt with premature oxidation in their wines much like Burgundy. This wine has been one of those which has had issues. Luckily, there were no such issues for this bottle. Still a light gold in color. The nose is nice with minerals, slight burnt orange and quince paste. On the palate, this is dry. Minerals and burnt orange peel (like in some cocktails). There is a bit of bitterness on the finish. From one of the top producers in the Loire Valley in France comes this great value in dry Chenin Blanc. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with orange peel, sea air and minerality. Medium bodied. Great texture. Dry. On the palate, there is quince, slight salinity and underlying minerality. Nice acidity. Long finish. This is delicious on its own and will work well with lighter foods and also Thai food. This is drinking well right now and should continue to do so for ten to twelve more years.

Vouvrays are made from the Chenin Blanc grape. Light gold in color. The nose is lovely with apricot, some orange peel, minerals and salinity. The palate is sweet. Not full on dessert wine, but sweet. Flavors of lemon hard candy; that sort of sweet/sour combination on the attack. The mid-palate has more oranges. Finishing back at the lemon hard candy. Long finish. This has good acidity and is food friendly. It also is full bodied and deep and works well on its own especially early on a nice summer evening outside. It is delicious. No doubt this could last for twenty years or more

Huet is one of the top producers in the world. That they make Chenin Blanc in the Loire Valley just keeps the price down. The 2020 is another star. Light golden in color, clear and bright. It has a great nose with orange peel, slight ginger, sea air, quince. Full bodied. Great balance. On the palate, this is slightly sweet with enough acidity to counter it. Flavors of quince, slight ginger and salinity. Long finish. This is drinking great now and should for another fifteen years. Great on its own, this will work nice with Thai food.
