2015 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Haut-Lieu, France, Loire Valley, Wine Review

Vouvrays are made from the Chenin Blanc grape. Light gold in color. The nose is lovely with apricot, some orange peel, minerals and salinity. The palate is sweet. Not full on dessert wine, but sweet. Flavors of lemon hard candy; that sort of sweet/sour combination on the attack. The mid-palate has more oranges. Finishing back at the lemon hard candy. Long finish. This has good acidity and is food friendly. It also is full bodied and deep and works well on its own especially early on a nice summer evening outside. It is delicious. No doubt this could last for twenty years or more and continue to develop and laying some down is not a bad idea, but buy at least one to drink young too. Certainly some upside for ageing.

Vouvray: A Chenin Blanc for the Ages

Among Americans, the Loire Valley is most often associated with gardens and castles and not much else. We journey the 150 kilometers southwest from Paris and take a day or two visiting Chateau de Chambord and Chenonceau, all the while enjoying the delightful flora and thinking of bygone days when princes and noblemen still roamed the cavernous halls in this ancient land. But the French know better. They know what we foreigners are just beginning to discover—that some of the most interesting, delicious, and affordable wines in the world hail from the chalky soil on which those famous castles stand.

This was a sound bottle. Many of the Huet 2002's are subject to premature oxidation. This bottle was excellent. Chenin Blanc, especially with some residual sugar left, can last for decades. Golden in color, clear and bright and slightly deep. On the nose this has orange peel, crushed shells, salinity and a touch of canned peaches. Medium bodied. Slightly sweet on the palate. Complex. Huet is perhaps my favorite producer of Chenin Blanc in the world. These are wines that will last for decades and drink well young (with a bit of air). This is one is demi-sec or off dry. Light golden in color, shimmering bright. The nose is pretty with orange peel, slight peach, sea air and minerals. Medium to full bodied. Slightly sweet but not cloying, which is nicely balanced by acidity. Delicious with flavors or oranges apples and peaches over a mineral base. Long finish. Domaine Huet makes some of the best Chenin Blanc wines anywhere in the world from dry to sweet to sparkling. This one is semi-dry and is wonderful. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is great with citrus (lemons and slight tangerine), salinity and chalk. Medium bodied. Light tannins. Good balance and acidity. On the palate, citrus with nice minerality. This is sweet but not at dessert levels. The acidity balances it nicely. This drinks great on its own and will work well with spicy Thai food. Drink over the next fifteen to twenty years.

The Vouvray's of Huet are my most often opened white wine. 100% Chenin Blanc. This vintage seems to be not a top vintage but the wine is still excellent and a nice value. Light golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with pears, sea air, some orange peel and slight herbal note. Medium bodied. Slightly oily texture. Crisp acidity. On the palate, this is dry (Sec) with pears and slight citrus. Moderate finish. This improved over the three hours it took to drain the bottle (two people).
