2010 Foreau Domaine du Clos Naudin Vouvray Sec, France, Loire Valley, Wine Review

This is Chenin Blanc from one of the top producers in Vouvray. While not to the same extent, Vouvray has dealt with premature oxidation in their wines much like Burgundy. This wine has been one of those which has had issues. Luckily, there were no such issues for this bottle. Still a light gold in color. The nose is nice with minerals, slight burnt orange and quince paste. On the palate, this is dry. Minerals and burnt orange peel (like in some cocktails). There is a bit of bitterness on the finish. It is a very good wine that really begs for food to shine. Good bottles of this have a long life left.

Vouvray: A Chenin Blanc for the Ages

Among Americans, the Loire Valley is most often associated with gardens and castles and not much else. We journey the 150 kilometers southwest from Paris and take a day or two visiting Chateau de Chambord and Chenonceau, all the while enjoying the delightful flora and thinking of bygone days when princes and noblemen still roamed the cavernous halls in this ancient land. But the French know better. They know what we foreigners are just beginning to discover—that some of the most interesting, delicious, and affordable wines in the world hail from the chalky soil on which those famous castles stand.

I opened this to drink blind to start off one of my tasting groups annual parties. Although it obviously has some age to it, it is drinking very well.

Pop and pour, this is in a good place right now. Light golden in color. The nose has a nice salinity with some orange peel. On the palate, this is barely sweet. It has an almost dry pineapple quality if that makes sense. Underlying minerality with a touch a salt (and yes, salt is also a mineral). Good finish. This is close to peak but will continue to morph and mature. No hurry on well stored bottles. Went well with cheeses.

2003 was an extremely hot vintage across all of Europe. The heat had two different effects on the vines. Some of the grapes got withered and raisened from the heat. Other vines just shut down an the grapes never got fully ripe. And, a few places thru a combination of luck, micro-climates and hard work in the vineyard made good wines. This wine seems to have a bit of all three of those. Still, at age 15, it is drinking very well. Medium deep golden in color. The nose is sugary with apricots. Nice showing for this bottle. A bit of oxidation, but the wine is almost 20! Deep golden in color with some orange hues, clear and bright. The nose has sea air, some burnt orange peel, and apricots. Slightly viscous. A touch of sweetness. This is deep and complex with apricots, orange peel and minerality. Not so much layered as close to seamless. Good acidity. Nice finish. This paired nicely with some salted truffle fries but would work well with goat cheese. Probably better with a touch of food at this point. Drink over the next ten years. Note, there are some oxidation issues
