2017 Weingut Korrell Johanneshof Riesling von den grossen lagen, Germany, Nahe, Wine Review

From Magnum. This proved to be an excellent choice to bring to a summer soiree of non-wine drinkers. First, it was a Magnum. Second, quite a few people passed on this as "they don't like Riesling, its too sweet". More for the rest of us. And, it is dry. 13% abv. Golden in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with peaches and some minerality. Medium bodied. Nice texture. On the palate, peaches with slight lemon and plenty of minerality. Moderate acidity. Nice finish. This drinks well on its own, and served chilled, was very refreshing on a summer day. Quite versatile with food. Drink over the next five to eight years.

Best German Rieslings (For the Money)

German Rieslings are, to put it bluntly, misunderstood wines. German winemakers will tell you that Riesling is their country's flagship wine and that the Riesling grape works perfectly with the cooler climates and slaty soils of German river valleys. If, however, you ask a group of non-German wine drinkers to tell you about Riesling, several of them will probably use phrases like "too sweet" and "doesn't pair well" in their descriptions. In my opinion, they are missing out on one of the world's great wines.

Translated it means "Green Wine" which refers to its youthful freshness. It's a low-alcohol, light, crisp, and slightly effervescent wine that is about as close to perfection as a summer wine can be. My first time trying this winery and I was very impressed though it had issues. Golden in color, with a slightly green hue to it. The nose smelled like fireworks or gun powder. I lovve that smell but it was a bit controversial. It also had a sweaty, wet wool sock note to it. In short, there seems to be a lot of sulfur showing here not too unlike how JJ Prums used to show a decade or so ago when the wines were young. None of that bothered me personally. There is also some lemon and wet rocks. On the palate, this has a nice texture. None of the sulfur carries thru to the palate. Lem
