2017 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos, France, Burgundy, Wine Review

It was interesting to try this side by side with the Vaudesir. While neither one could be called blowsy or showy, this has more presence and weight. Light golden/green in color, clear and bright. The nose is classic Chablis. Green apples, chalky minerality, slight gunpowder and slight white flowers. Full bodied. Great balance. Firm acidity. On the palate, green apples with underlying minerality and just a hint of flint/gunpowder. Long finish. This is nice on its own but needs food to really shine. Shell fish would be ideal but it went nicely with Japanese Noodles as well. This is still young but with a bit of air, drinks nicely. Drink over the next fifteen to twenty years.

A stunning wine if still a bit young. In a day when Grand Cru Burgs are priced crazily, this is about the best one that is almost affordable. It certainly is not your typical Chablis in profile either. Golden in color. Not dark but not light either. No noticeable oxidation. The nose has peaches, slight chalk and a bit of pepper/spice. On the palate, the peaches carry thru over a concentrated minerality. Great round texture. Good acidity but not bracing. Nice finish. In general, this is a big round wine that is just delicious. Excellent wine that really needs some time. Lots of upside potential here. Light golden in color. The nose is fat (for Chablis) with red fugi apples over a nice chalky base. On the palate, this has a soft texture with good if not great acidity. It is delicious. Lots going on with tight layers of complexity. Long finish. Perhaps not a classic sort of Chablis, yet, it is an outstanding chardonnay.

Light golden/green in color. Lovely nose of flint with slight green apples. A big nose over all. In the palate, this has a slightly oily texture. Great acidity. Slight green apples with lots of minerals. Long finish. This was my WOTN at a recent blind tasting of Chablis although the group had it in 4th place. Still young, this should continue to evolve and mature for the next decade and be good for another decade or more after that. It will pair well with seafood, salads and other lighter foods.

Can a Grand Cru be austere and pretty at the same time? This wine seems to answer that question in a positive way. Green/gold in color, clear and bright. The nose has great minerality along with peach and slight lemon peel. Medium to full bodied. Crisp, tangy acidity. On the palate, there are peach and lemon lime notes that are piercing yet delicious. Long finish. This wine begs for food. Shell fish would be ideal but it worked well with a sauteed mushroom dish as well. Drink over the next eight to twelve years.
