2016 Castello di Ama Chianti Classico Gran Selezione San Lorenzo, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review

What a great vintage 2016 ha turned out to be for Chianti in general and this one in particular. Not the cheapest Chianti, but this is outstanding. Deep ruby/purple in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose is great with cherries, black cherries, sandalwood and tea leaves. Medium bodied. Great balance. Lovely acidity. Spry. On the palate, lots of lush black cherry fruit with underlying forest floor. Clean. Deep. Long finish. This will continue to mature for another five to eight years and drink well for a decade after that. A nice match for pasts of all kinds.

Another very nice Chianti carrying the Gran Selezione designation which came about in 2015 and is the highest designation of quality in Chianti. Of course, not all wines carrying this designation are created equally. This is purple in color with some ruby swirls. The nose is interesting with red apples and sour cherries also some balsamic vinegar and slight tea leaves. On the palate, this still has medium tannins. Cherry and sour cherry fruit with a bit of damp forest floor. Slight port like notes of sweet alcohol on the finish but not enough to be an issue. Overall, a very tasty Chi

There are so many truly great values in 2015/2016 Chiant's that this one was a bit disappointing. That is a bit harsh, as this is an excellent wine. But for the price and pedigree, more was expected (which is perhaps a bit unfair). Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries, slight coffee and a bit of forest floor. Medium bodied. On the palate, ripe fruit. Not the level of acidity that I come to expect in chianti, but some. Light tannins. Gran Selezione is the top level of Chianti wines. This vintage, 2015, was an excellent vintage in Chianti. And, this wine meets the high expectations those factors create. Purple in color, with ruby swirls. The nose is interesting with black cherries, cherries, saw dust and a strong streak of black olives. Great acidity. Firm tannins. Nice texture. On the palate, this is complex and deep while also delicious. Black cherries, some cherries with slight tea leaves and char. Long finish. Still young, this should get better but drinking nicely now. It was interesting trying this along side a bunch of Chianti Classico Riservas including this winery's 2019. While both were good, I preferred the 2019 CCR. And, its half the price. This is inky purple in color with slight ruby hues, mostly opaque and bright. The nose comes across very "Bordeaux" like. Aromas of black cherries, cigar box, fresh tobacco and spice. One of my evil guilty pleasures is to put this on the table with non wine geeks and see if they drink it. Usually, they don't, but the ones who do are impressed. Some will just see that it is a Chianti and think it can't be any good. This is possibly the best that Chianti offers and certainly one of the top wines that Italy offers.
