2021 San Felice Chianti Classico Gran Selezione La Pieve, Italy, Tuscany, Wine Review

Great showing for this "Gran Selezione" wine (the highest class for Chianti Classicos from the excellent 2021 vintage. Deep ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is deep with aromas of black cherries, cherries, sandalwood, slight tobacco and slight spice. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Nice acidity. On the palate, this is tasty. Flavors of black cherries, cherries and some forest floor notes. Long finish. This has some complexity and depth and these should come out with some short term cellaring. It is nice on its own but this wine is made for food. It would go quite nicely with (vegetarian) Lasagna. Drink over the next ten to twelve years.

Another very nice Chianti carrying the Gran Selezione designation which came about in 2015 and is the highest designation of quality in Chianti. Of course, not all wines carrying this designation are created equally. This is purple in color with some ruby swirls. The nose is interesting with red apples and sour cherries also some balsamic vinegar and slight tea leaves. On the palate, this still has medium tannins. Gran Selezione is the top level of Chianti wines. This vintage, 2015, was an excellent vintage in Chianti. And, this wine meets the high expectations those factors create. Purple in color, with ruby swirls. The nose is interesting with black cherries, cherries, saw dust and a strong streak of black olives. Great acidity. Firm tannins. Nice texture. On the palate, this is complex and deep while also delicious. Black cherries, some cherries with slight tea leaves and char. Long finish. Still young, this should get better but drinking nicely now. There are so many truly great values in 2015/2016 Chiant's that this one was a bit disappointing. That is a bit harsh, as this is an excellent wine. But for the price and pedigree, more was expected (which is perhaps a bit unfair). Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cherries, slight coffee and a bit of forest floor. Medium bodied. On the palate, ripe fruit. Not the level of acidity that I come to expect in chianti, but some. Light tannins. It was interesting trying this along side a bunch of Chianti Classico Riservas including this winery's 2019. While both were good, I preferred the 2019 CCR. And, its half the price. This is inky purple in color with slight ruby hues, mostly opaque and bright. The nose comes across very "Bordeaux" like. Aromas of black cherries, cigar box, fresh tobacco and spice.
