2015 J. Bookwalter Cabernet Franc Suspense Conner-Lee Vineyard, USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Wine Review

This is a very nice Cab Franc from Washington. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose has black cherries, tobacco and slight bell pepper. On the palate, this has a nice complexity. Good fruits black cherries and cherries with underlying herbal notes. Good finish. Slight tannins. This works better with foods and went well with a home made pizza. It seems still young and might get better but should easily last another 5 to ten years.

A very nice Cab Franc and a nice value. Purple in color, some ruby, opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, slight cigar box, slighter bell pepper, and spice. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Good balance. On the palate, black cherry fruit with some tobacco and slight bell pepper. Good finish. Drinking well and should continue for seven to ten years. Nice on its own, this will work well with Lamb Stew.

This is drinking well and at maturity (although no hurry). Purple in color, ruby at the rim, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has black cherries, iron, slight tobacco and slight iodine. Medium to full bodied. Light tannins. On the palate, this has black cherry fruit with underlying tobacco and a bit of that iron note. Good acidity. Nice finish. Drink over the next five to seven years. This will work better with food. Roasted chicken or vegetables would work well.

This is an excellent value in red wine. It is a blend of 80% Merlot with the remainder Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Deep ruby in color. The nose has black cherries, black raspberries, dark chocolate and a hint of spice. Medium bodied. On the palate, this has nice black cherry fruit with some depth. Light tannins. Underlying earthiness. Good acidity. Nice finish. This drinks well on its own and should be great with poultry dishes or even a burger. It should be consumed over the next five to seven years. A few months ago, we reviewed the Cabernet Sauvignon from the vintage and vineyard, so it was nice to go back and taste the Cab Franc. While not quite at that level, it is quite good. Purple in color. The nose has black cherries, cigar tobacco and cedar. On the palate, this has a lush but sinewy texture. Lots of black cherry fruit. Some depth. Good balance. Medium tannins. Nice length. This should continue to mature and may improve a bit. It works well on its own but better with food. Roasts or casseroles go well.

Kelly's Island is part of a group of islands in the south western section of Lake Erie just off the Ohio coast. Back in the mid-1800's this was one of the leading wine areas of the country. Now it is kind of a summer resort escape area. It is always difficult to make reds in Ohio due to late and early frosts and lots of thunderstorms and hail and very hot temperatures. Yields were apparently way down in 2022, but luckily a friend lives right next to the winery and was able to snag a bottle for us. This wine seems to be somewhere between a very serious rosé and a lighter red wine. 11.5
