2015 Domaine Trapet (Jean et Jean-Louis) Gevrey-Chambertin, France, Burgundy, Wine Review

This took a while to open. In fact, about 3 hours until it really started to hit its stride. My score went from an 88 to a 91 during that time, so I guess this needs some cellaring or time. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is tight but eventually shows some cherries and cherry powder. Some spice and an interesting iron note. On the palate, this has tart cherries. With air, they got a bit fresher and riper. The finish was more about sour cherries. Nice texture. Some depth.

No winery is more famous, or produces such legendary wines in Burgundy than Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. Often abbreviated as DRC, the winery makes some of the most exclusive and expensive wines in the world. This seemed to be in a great place right now. Ruby in color. The nose is cherries, slight sour cherries and slight anise. On the palate, this is still youthful but showing nice depth. Slightly viscous. Sour cherries and cherries with underlying anise and minerals. Good finish. This will work with a wide variety of foods, even sea food. Probably needs another five years until peak and then should drink well for another decade after that.

Garnet in color, opaque and bright. The nose is quite tight. Even with a lot of coaxing, this seemed closed for business. On the palate, this is a bit more open, especially with some air. Black cherry fruit, some cherries and spice. Good mouthfeel and balance. Long finish. This needs another five to ten years and should drink well for ten to fifteen after that. This would work well with a Wild Mushroom Risotto.

Purple/ruby in color. The nose has cherries, sandalwood and slight cherry juice. On the palate, light tannins. Cherry juice. Some depth. Nice fruit. Not a lot of acidity. Works better with food.

About ten years ago, a west coast retailer dumped these on the market. And, I mean dumped. About $15 a bottle. Never knew why but bought some anyway as did lots of others. It seems that has tainted the perception of this wine as every time people open one, the story is told and the comments factor in the price. Frankly, that does this wine a dis-service. At age 13, from a solid vintage, this wine is drinking quite well and appears to be at peak. Pale ruby in color. The nose is earthy, slightly dishwater with good fresh cherries as well.
