2014 Tablas Creek Panoplie, USA, California, Paso Robles, Adelaida District, Wine Review

From Magnum. This is a blend of 65% Mourvedre, 28% Grenache, and 7% Syrah. Basically, this is the top wine offered by Tablas Creek. Especially from Magnum, but even by bottle, this wine is still young. That said, it also drinks well young, so don't be deterred. Purple in color with some ruby hues, opaque and bright. The nose has plums, raspberries, roasted meats and herbs and just a bit of spices. Full bodied. Lush texture. On the palate, plenty of fruit; raspberries, black raspberries, and plums, along with spice and some earthiness. Good acidity. Long finish. This is delicious now but should still get a bit better. Drink over the next eight to twelve years.

2008 Hospice du Rhone Events: Highs & Lows of American Rhone-style Wines Tasted

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. The 16th annual Hospice du Rhone events in Paso Robles, California from May 1 to 3, 2008 was an opportunity to consider Rhone-style wines from a fresh perspective. Unlike most tasting opportunities, these events included Rhone-style wines from the Rhone Valley itself (51 wineries), elsewhere in France (4 wineries) as well as from Spain (4 wineries), Australia (17 wineries), South Africa (6 wineries), Chile (2 wineries), Argentina (1 winery) and the United States. The American wines were mostly from California (144 wineries), but a few examples from Arizona (2 wineries) and Washington State (5 wineries) were also included. While this is a California-dominated event, and while many of the Rhone Valley’s best producers aren’t represented, there is still sufficient European and other entries to make for interesting comparisons and contrasts. The events included two general tastings and a series of focused seminars.

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we discussed the white Rhone style wines offered at the 2008 Rhone Rangers tasting event at Fort Mason in San Francisco on March 18. This month we turn to the reds, of which we tasted 50. Among those we tasted were some old favorites and some wineries or bottlings with which we were not yet familiar. We don’t pretend that we tasted a representative group of wines, because our sample was skewed to wines we have loved in the past and others about which we have heard positive comments.

This is basically the second wine of Esprit de Tablas from Tablas Creek although they make a lot of different wines, not all available without being in their wine club (highly recommended). This sell for around $30 and can often be found at retail shops. It is young and will likely improve a bit over the next few years. Screw capped! Grenache, Syrah, Counoise and Mourvedre. Whereas the Esprit can be compared to a Chateauneuf du Pape, this is more like a better Cotes du Rhone or even a Gigondas. It has a deep ruby color with some purple swirls. This is blend of 46% Mourvedre, 31% Syrah, 18% Grenache, and 5% Counoise grapes. Tasted from a 375ml bottle. In a full bottle, these will age wonderfully. In this format, they should still age well, but this was a great chance to check in on the wine. Deep ruby in color. The nose has plums, black raspberries, black cherries, spice and char. On the palate, this has a lovely texture. Energetic. Medium tannins. Right now, the black cherries dominate but that will change as it ages. Delicious. Good finish. Tablas Creek has some great levels of wine clubs which offer up wines not available outside the winery or in different formats. This one is easily available although this particular bottle was from a 375ml bottle ($25). It is a blend of 49% Mourvèdre, 25% Grenache, 21% Syrah, and 5% Counoise. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. A lovely nose of black raspberries, raspberries, spice and anise. On the palate, this has firm tannins but the fruit is open and drinking well.
