2014 Faiveley Mazis-Chambertin, France, Burgundy, Wine Review

This was decanted for a few hours prior to drinking. Deep ruby in color. The nose has cherries, sour cherries, raspberries, slight earthy funk. On the palate, this has big red fruits. Light tannins. Very well balance. Mostly cherries with underlying earth. Long finish. This is very concentrated. It needs at least ten years and closer to twenty to hit peak. It will work well with roasted fowl. Lots of upside on the score with some patience.

This was popped and poured but it took about an hour to blow off some bottle stink and another hour to really get into gear. It would have been better served to pop the cork and allowed to breathe for a few hours. Luckily, we had the time to wait. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose (after a couple hours) is nice with cherries, earthy funk and slight floral notes. Medium bodied. On the palate, this has cherries layered with earthiness. Slightly soft. Deep. Nice finish. Wow. Wonderful showing for this wine. Garnet in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose is deep (and great) with cherries, black cherries, roasted meats, spice and slight dark chocolate. Full bodied. On the palate, this is complex and layered. Black cherries, slight sour cherries, and spice with underlying earthiness. Long finish. This is great on its own and would be nice to slowly savor but it will work well with food. Roasted duck would be a nice match. This bottle was about at peak, but should easily go another ten to fifteen years.

2015 is a great vintage and I was excited to get a chance to try this one. In Burgundy terms, this is certainly a value. It was selling for under $40. Ruby/purple in color. Very bright. On the nose, sour cherries and slight cranberries. Very nice lush texture. Medium tannins. On the palate, a bit one dimensional at this point. Plenty of sour cherry fruit. It drinks more like a new world Pinot than I expected. Perhaps those labels mean less and less these days. This is an excellent value. For around $18, it is hard to get a better Pinot anywhere. Not that it is amazing or mind blowing, but it is correct and affordable. That is what Bourgogne should be about. Purple/ruby in color. The nose is dusty with cherries, powdered cherry drink and slight spice. This has a very nice medium bodied, silky texture. Cherries and sour cherries on the palate. Slight depth. Good balance. Nice finish.

This took a while to open. In fact, about 3 hours until it really started to hit its stride. My score went from an 88 to a 91 during that time, so I guess this needs some cellaring or time. Ruby/purple in color. The nose is tight but eventually shows some cherries and cherry powder. Some spice and an interesting iron note. On the palate, this has tart cherries. With air, they got a bit fresher and riper. The finish was more about sour cherries. Nice texture. Some depth.
