This is really drinking well right now. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, underlying graphite and slight black pepper. On the palate, there is nice black raspberry fruit. Good texture. Plenty of depth. Still drinking on the young side of maturity. Medium tannins. Good acidity. Worked well with food. Not a monster wine but plenty of fruit and delicious. Still some development to go and possible upside.
Wow, did this bottle exceed expectations (and they were pretty high). It really grabs one's attention. Though still on the young side, it is drinking great. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is big with black raspberries, roasted meats, slight clove, plums and just a bit of graphite. Full bodied. Rich texture. Deep and complex. Juicy acidity. Very nice showing for this. Seems to be just about at peak, of course, noting that Zinfandel matures earlier and Petite Sirah later. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose has boysenberries, black cherries, raspberries along with some leather and minerality. Medium bodied. On the palate, this has a nice complexity. Also very tasty. Layers of fruit (black and red raspberries) with some underlying minerality. Nice finish. This should have another five to seven more years and probably more. This is starting to come into its own but still is young and really needs more time. Pop and pour, this should have been decanted. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, an underlying char with some peppery notes. On the palate, this is concentrated but has a lot of black raspberry fruit. Dense. Medium tannins. Worked well with spicy Chile Relenos. It could use a few more years of cellaring and there is some slight upside for that.
What a great showing for this wine. Consumed over two nights, this was better on the second night. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with boysenberries, charred gravel, spices and slight black licorice. Full bodied. Wonderful texture. This has a nice depth and complexity which did not show until the second day. I absolutely loved this wine. And for $32, this is a great value. What I like about Petite Syrah is that it is not as boisterous as Syrah but in a similar vein. The two grapes are not (at least closely) related. Many times it seems Petite producers try to "correct" for this and get too much ripeness. It is a fine line, but this wine really does a wonderful job of expressing the true qualities of Petite. It does need some air and time to open, so keep that in mind if drinking now.
