2013 Campesino Grenache Steel Plow Vineyard, USA, California, Sonoma Valley, Wine Review

An excellent wine. I have been a big fan of Macario Montoya's wines for a while, but I believe this was the first time trying this wine. I am not sure if there is anything else in this blend other than Grenache. Purple in color. The nose has black raspberries, chocolate, spice and slight oak notes. On the palate, this is full bodied with a wonderful texture. Medium tannins. Black raspberries, black cherries, slight blueberries and a bit of chocolate over a mineral base. Long finish. This wine grabs your attention but it is not overblown. It should last another decade at least. It will go well with stews, or casseroles or even roasts.

The Rhone Report: About Rhone and Rhone-Style Wines and Winemakers is part of an ongoing series. Last month we discussed the white Rhone style wines offered at the 2008 Rhone Rangers tasting event at Fort Mason in San Francisco on March 18. This month we turn to the reds, of which we tasted 50. Among those we tasted were some old favorites and some wineries or bottlings with which we were not yet familiar. Campesino is a winery that makes excellent Rhone varietal wines for fair prices. It is a list that people should be signing up for if the wines are not available in the local marketplace. This is one of the better, more refreshing Rose's on the market made from mostly Grenache.

Few people make Grenache in California at a level of this. Manfred Krankl, the owner/winemaker here, does it consistently. It skirts the line of being large yet having elegance. This is a blend of 76% Grenache, 16% Syrah, and 8% Mourvedre. Just a delicious wine. Inky purple in color. The nose has great raspberry fruit along with black raspberries, char, black pepper and spice. Full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, the raspberries and black raspberries come thru. Grenache seems to be one of the more difficult grapes to make wine with in California. So many are overdone and taste roasted while others are thin and insipid. It is a grape that gets very ripe and matching that to the California sunshine is not easy. Andremily is one winery that seems to achieve that balance. They are big wines but not roasted or hot, but full of flavor and texture. A blend of 80% Grenache, 14% Mourvedre and 6% Syrah. Purple in color, opaque and bright. There are not a lot of great producers of Grenache in California, but there are a few who excel and at the top is Manfred Krankl and his Sine Qua Non wines. At age 13, this is just hitting its stride and just outstanding. A blend of 82% Grenache, 14% Syrah, 2% Viognier and 2% Roussanne. Purple in color, opaque and bright. The nose is great with black cherries, black raspberries, roasted meats and spices. Full bodied. 15.8% abv but no heat. On the palate, black cherries with some black raspberries over a bit of char.
