2012 Corliss Estates Cabernet Sauvignon, USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Wine Review

Another Washington wine that was nice to try. 97% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Petite Verdot. Purple in color, ruby at the rim. The nose is nice with cassis, some chocolate, a bit of blueberries and spice. On the palate, this has a lush texture. It is tight but with air opens in the glass. Cassis and blueberry fruit with spice and oak. It needs a few years and will probably improve by a point or two. Nice finish. It is concentrated but a big wine and will need bigger foods or great on its own.

Cabernet Sauvignon – Old Vines in Washington State

Zillah, Washington State, 1994. I was completely disoriented. It was hot. I was standing in a dry, semi – desert terrain, but looking west, I saw glacier capped Mt. Rainier. The roads weren’t paved, the wineries badly marked. Tasting rooms consisted of folding tables in the corners of barrel rooms, or in the family rec room with 1970’s shag carpeting. Often, I had to ring an outdoor bell to bring someone in from the fields to pour tastes.

This is 87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Merlot, 5% Malbec and 2% Petite Verdot from Washington state. Deep garnet in color, mostly opaque and bright. The nose has cassis, char and slight dark chocolate. Full bodied. Silky tannins. On the palate, black cherries, cassis, slight chocolate and a bit of spice. Some minty and bitter cherry notes on the finish. There is some depth here and it may improve a bit with short term cellaring. It is nice on its own, but seemed better with food. Of course, a burger would do, but it worked great with Felafel. Drink over the next five to eight years.

This is an excellent value in red wine. It is a blend of 80% Merlot with the remainder Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Malbec. Deep ruby in color. The nose has black cherries, black raspberries, dark chocolate and a hint of spice. Medium bodied. On the palate, this has nice black cherry fruit with some depth. Light tannins. Underlying earthiness. Good acidity. Nice finish. This drinks well on its own and should be great with poultry dishes or even a burger. It should be consumed over the next five to seven years. Purple in color, ruby t the rim. The nose has cassis and bell pepper. Also some baking spice. The bell pepper is distracting but eventually mostly blows off which is fine. On the palate, this is better. Cassis with some underlying oak/spice. Some depth and complexity. Seems tight and a bit shut down at this point, so give it plenty of air if opening. This will work with medium and heavier foods nicely. Certainly has potential for improvement.
