2004 Renato Corino Barolo Vigneto Rocche, Italy, Piedmont, Wine Review

This is really drinking well. If not at peak, pretty damn close. Light ruby in color with some orange bricking at the rim. The nose is very pretty with cherries, slight dried cherries, slight roses and hints of hot tar. On the palate, this has a lovely texture. Light tannins. Cherry fruit layered with earthiness. Good balance. Nice finish. This has a contemplative quality for drinking alone, but works great with food. Pasta and mushrooms are perfect. It won't get better but should drink well for seven to ten more years at least.

This was purchased at the winery and brought back by a friend. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is classic with cherries, tar and slight baking spice. Medium to full bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, this is surprisingly open. Cherries with underlying asphalt. Good acidity. Long finish. This is obviously young but drinking well already. It should drink well for the next twenty years. Nice on its own, this would be better with food. Pasta in a cream and mushroom sauce would be great.

This is in a great place right now. Ruby in color with slight browning. The nose has cherries, slight raspberries, slight tar and slight forest floor. Medium bodied. Tannins are mostly resolved. On the palate, nice cherry notes with some forest floor underneath. Good acidity. Nice finish. This is at peak. it should be consumed over the next five to seven years. It goes great with pasta and cream sauce and will work well with meat based dishes too.

From Magnum. This was really enjoyable. In a young, but nice place right now. Deep ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is as expected, that is, cherries, slight dark cherries, dried floral notes, spice and slight tar. With air, a slight menthol note. Medium to full bodied. Firm tannins. Juicy acidity. On the palate, this has dense cherries with some spice. Deep but primary. Delicious. Slight sweet and sour cherry note on the finish. This (again from Magnum) of course needs more time. This one is drinking very nicely at 9 years from vintage. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is nice with cherries, slight black cherries, rose and slight menthol. Medium bodied. Medium tannins. On the palate, nice cherry fruit with underlying char and a bit of woodiness (sticks?). Good acidity. This is accessible now and may still improve but no reason to wait. It should easily go another seven to ten years. This drinks nicely on its own but will be better with food. Pasta with mushrooms in a cream sauce should be excellent.

Great showing for this wine. Decanted for sediment and air for about 4 hours. Light ruby in color, clear and bright. No browning. The nose is pretty with cherries, slight cherry juice, roses, black cherries and slight forest floor. Medium to full bodied. On the palate, the black cherries come thru a bit stronger. Mild tannins. Underlying forest floor. Great acidity. Long finish. This has layers of fruit and earth. It seems to be drinking close to prime now, but well stored bottles should easily have another decade. This will work great with pasta, mushrooms or more savory meat
