2004 Bruno Giacosa Barolo Vigna Croera di La Morra, Italy, Piedmont, Wine Review

I was looking for a nice Barolo to take to a friends dinner party. This was in the cellar and I neglected to check my own notes for this wine. It was just as tight as a bottle opened last May. It really needs time and to be decanted. That said, with some vigorous swirling it did open up and provided an enjoyable experience. Ruby in color. The nose takes some time but eventually show some cherries, roses and slight tar. On the palate, this has tight layering which has cherries, earth and slight forest floor notes. Nice acidity. Good finish. Went very well with some stuffed Portabello mushrooms.

This bottle was opened and decanted for a few hours. Still young but really blossoming. Ruby in color, clear and bright. The nose is gorgeous with cherries, roses, slight tar and slight dried cherries. On the palate, this has great cherry fruit. Light tannins. Layers of fruit, earth and dry forest floor. Complex. Long finish. Good acidity. Better with food. This continued to improve for the 2 hours or so it was opened. Still some upside but a great Barolo.

The last Bruno Giacosa was one of the premier producers in Barolo. Sadly, he passed away a couple years ago. The top wines he made were given a red label and Riserva status. This bottle is still youthful but it is drinking great. Purple, ruby rim. Still looks quite young. Tight nose; cherries, slight tea leaves and dried roses. A bit of tar. Just the slightest bit of VA with air, which is good as it ends up bringing out the aromatics. Delicious on the palate. Tight layers of cherries, cherry candy, anise and earth. Decanted for sediment, this is still a bit young but no harm opening now. Deep garnet with slight bricking, clear and bright. Classic nose of cherries, slight dried cherries, some floral/rose notes and slight tar. Full bodied. Medium tannins. Good acidity. On the palate, this is showing nice complexity. Lots of cherries, some dried cherries, with some underlying forest floor, mushrooms and tar. Long finish. This drinks better with food. Mushroom pizza is a great choice. Drink over the next fifteen to twenty years.

Great showing for this wine. Light ruby with slight orange/brown near the edges. Mostly clear and bright. The nose is classic with cherries, slight dried cherries, roses and slight tar. Medium to full bodied with medium tannins. On the palate, this is complex and delicious. Cherries, dried cherries with underlying char. Layers of flavors that unwind in the glass. Great balance. Long finish. This is close to peak at this point, but no hurry. It should be at this level for ten or more years. Better with food. A perfect match for a mushroom or truffle dish.

This was an off bottle. It had been purchased via Acker-Merrill auction and probably at some point in its life, exposed to excessive heat. Nevertheless, it was still enjoyable as a wine, even if not what it should have been. Ruby in color. The nose has cherries, brown sugar, dried cherries and raisins. On the palate, this is a bit disjointed but has some nice cherry flavors. Still has some light tannins. Some alcohol showing. Finishes with dried cherries. Another example why provenance is so important. No score is assigned.
