Consumed side by side, I preferred the 2001 but both showed quite well at over twenty years old. This is a blend of 67% Mourvedre, 22% Petite Sirah, with the remainder Valdepenas and Alicante Bouchet. Purple/ruby in color, mostly clear and bright. The nose has black cherries, spice and slight char. Clean. The wine is full bodied with the tannins mostly resolved. The palate is complex and layered with black cherries, gravel, char, and spice. Long finish. This is probably a bit past peak and should be consumed sooner than later. It will work better with food. This would be nice with a bowl of Mushroom Barley Soup.
